MJ more influencial?

At the tourny last night a girl did a speech on Michael Jackson. In the speech she made the claim that MJ had a bigger and better influence on the world then Martin Luther King Jr. did. I thought, personally, this was ridiculous.

Your thoughts?

I think my mom is more influential the Barack Obama.

Michael Jackson changed a pop genre and Martin Luther King Jr. started a civil rights movement, I just think that's quite a bit more influential.
 
MLK didn't start a civil rights movement, he simply continued and added a face to it. The civil rights movement had been happening long before he showed up.

*Edit* I don't in any way mean for that to detract from what he did, I simply mean to say that it was a LONG process.

GW, you mentioned that the influence was over the world, not just the US. MJ has it hands down. MLK impacted our culture in ways few people have, but his life made no difference whatever to teenagers in European villages. Michael did.

Exactly? Well, I haven't had a chance to interview ;) but the music you hear naturally influences the music you like ... the music you listen to. Millions of kids worldwide flocked to Jackson's concerts. A few of those heard of MLK; fewer still remember who he was, what he did, etc.

The average Japanese kid did not benefit at all from Dr King's awesome actions, but he definitely was influenced by the moonwalk.

The difference is that Dr Kings actions CHANGED lives. People can vote, go to school, eat in restaurants - actually be treated as human beings because of his actions.

MJ was only entertainment. He changed the way people dance? That's it?

And I would say people EVERYWHERE in the world have had indirect benefits of the cicil rights movements. Racism and cultural hatred are certainly less prevelent since the attitudes toward them changed in the 60's. Certainly still lots of problems, but I think we've had major advances in 50 years.
