WASHINGTON - Fast-food waitress Fawn Townsend of Raleigh, N.C., knows exactly what she is going to do if her salary goes up with Tuesday’s increase in the federal minimum wage: start saving for a car so she can find a second job to make ends meet.
“My goal personally is to get a vehicle so I can independently go back and forth to work and maybe pick up extra work so I can have that extra income, because minimum wage is not cutting it,” said Townsend, who is 24 and single.
“Being a single person, you can’t pay all your bills with one minimum wage job.”
Many lawmakers, along with advocates for low-wage workers, are celebrating the first increase in the federal minimum wage in a decade. Yet many acknowledge that raising it from $5.15 an hour to $5.85 will provide only meager help for some of the lowest paid workers.
About 1.7 million people made $5.15 or less in 2006, according to the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“The reality for a minimum wage worker is that every penny makes a difference because low-wage workers make the choice between putting food on the table and paying for electricity or buying clothes for their children,” said Beth Shulman, former vice president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

no that is the federal minimum. States can set a higher minimum if they like. I know in Oregon the minimum is $7 something, here it is $5.35, but they are raising it to $7.25 in January

More bs from the governements of this world.

#1 They can rise up minimum wage to 7.50 or 8 or 9 for everyone, if they wanted to.
#2 Rising it from 5.15 to 5.85 is a damn joke.
#3 There are other major problems too, which i wont mention. But i know some folks who complain about 7.75 , thats only because those other major problems exist.
#4 We have the Rich/wealthy/and poor, and its been that way since i dont know when, maybe after adam and eve died, who knows. Either way, minimum wage is a joke, and mankind is the cause of why people are having such a hard time in life.
#5 no worries, better days are coming.......

anywhere minimum wage is high, everything you buy is more expensive.

It doesnt have to be. Thats like saying, people have to charge 750 dollars for a one bed room APT. Which btw is not true.

Reaver, please dont fall for the tricks of this world. Yea , sure [some of us] cant change a damn thing about it, but it doesnt mean we should'nt study it or pay attention it, so when the time comes, we can correct the problems.

Minimum wage going up , has nothing to do with things going up in price. Because minimum wage is low as hell right now, and in most stores/business, almost everything is already expensive.

You know i was walking in the mall last night and i seen a VCR for 100 dollars. See, bs right there.

What kind of economy are you talking about??? If wages go up, the cost to manufacture a product goes up. If the end price stays the same, profits go down. Capitalism is all about profit, therefore the price of the product would have to rise.

Care to explain why alot of products are up , when minimum wage is way way :eek:down? I also have another question, are you a millionare?
No, I'm not a millionaire. But I did take Economics in high school. Why are prices up while minimum wage is down? Easy. More profit. Like I said before, capitalism is all about profit.

If you're claiming to be a millionaire, that doesn't mean you know everything about money. I'm certainly not claiming to know it all either, but I do know you'll never learn anything if you already think you know it.

No, I'm not a millionaire.

You sure enough sound like some millionaires that i have talked to over the years. They seem to always say rising up minimum wage will rise prices on products. But its funny how people keep saying that, when already minimum wage has been at its lowest for i dont know when, and yet products are already high in price, way high.

Dude, again you sound like a very rich person ( not all, but some ) and you also sound like a politician. And even tho i do not care for politics, i fully understand how they work and how they think, and look at things.
You talking about capitalism and economices, none of that matters, the bottom line, already minimum wage is down, there are millions and millions poor people across the world, and yet products are up.

Also, more profit? Yea, but what are the poor getting from it?
Nothing. Like i said before, the rich and the poor, its sad to see it, but things will change soon. :D:muscles:

Again. Profits. How do you not get capitalism??? It's simple. Now if you raise the minimum wage, the companies are gonna want to keep their profits the same, so they'll raise the end price higher.

How the hell do capitalism and economics not matter in a debate about...you guessed it, capitalism and economics :confused
