Its an idea being put out by the Conservatives here but do you think it's a good idea?
I say no. People with drink problems will neglect other expenses to pay for booze and even steal for it so all this will do is create more problems while penalising sensible drinkers.

Sounds like more Nanny Government social engineering bullshit.
And I dont even drink anymore.

Exactly! I'm fed up with the nanny state that Labour has been creating and will still vote Conservative as I think the're slightly better but it seems they still want more of the silly big brother state.:(:thumbdown

What's the point behind it? To try and make people not drink due to it being expensive?

I'd love to see them try and take a drink away from an englishman.

Thats exactly the point which is so stupid when you consider the mentality of the hardened boozer. Loads of us already stock up on cheap booze on day trips to France as it is so this has fail written all over it.
Tax on alcohol pays the entire cost of the NHS 5 times over as it is so the argument about health costs really hasn't got a leg to stand on either.
This is just a pointless exercise to pander to the broken Britain tag hyped up by the media and win more votes. Unfortunately your average voter dosen't see through these publicity gimmicks.

Oh, there's already been a media and government led persecution on smokers, I've even noticed it when I'm smoking legally in open places from 5 years ago. I walk along smoking a cigarette these days and people passing you now look at you like you're just pissed in their face. The anti smoking scaremongering adverts they still keep playing on telly every ad break keeps it going.
Look, I know smoking and drinking a lot is bad for me, you dont need to be a fucking genius to work it out these days but if I like doing it and am not hurting anyone, what's your fucking problem???

I dunno, I feel the same way. .Some people just feel they have the need to run others lives.

they need to tax the fast food addicts, that would be great. i HATE how the government tries to pull mandates on cigarettes and alcohol, pure bastardism.

we got state minimums on shit in the states

Milk, cigs, to name a couple

is that state minimums or is that state tax?

we tax heavier on things that can be considered vices

but we also make sure the price of certain things stay high enough so supply will not fall...

maybe THAT's what they're doing!!! making the price high enough so supply won't fall

people will just start making their own alcohol...haha

people used to make there own cigs here too. a bag of cheap loose tabacco was like 8 bucks for 6oz.

then Pa got smart and they upped the tax on the loose stuff and it was like 24.00 for 6oz. went up 16.00:eek
