Yall remember me posting about DS busting his head open and me having to bring him to the ER 2 different times that week? got ALL the bills in. grand total nears $1500! thats WITH insurance! the cheapest bill is the radiology bill at $22.01! aside from that one, we have 4 other bills for it all!!

the 1st visit was with a different insurance with a different hospital. all they did was make us wait for 5 hours and dermabonded his wound. one bill is the hospital bill and another is a physicians bill

the 2nd visit was with the new insurance and a different (better) hospital (that i should have brought him to in the 1st place) that did the CAT scan. one bill is from the hospital and another is from the insurance! i thought insurance was suppose to PAY YOU, not the other way around! :willy_nilly::willy_nilly::willy_nilly:

Next time i'll just fix him up with super glue and duct tape! scew this hospital crap!!

never heard of insurance company billing you

you sure it is not a statement indicating what they cover/not cover?

its saying its the amount we owe, but the only bill we got (for this one) is far from the amount saying we owe. so its confusing. hell any kind of medical/insurance billing is confusing to me!

im just use to his easy pay right then and there $45 office visits! LOL

The one from the insurance company is probably an EOB and probably has watermarked on there, "THIS IS NOT A BILL".

I'd say I'd trade you for my hospital bills from my stay 3 years ago, but I just got it paid off. I'm lucky in that my share was only about $1000, but the total was $30,000. As it stands right now, I owe $250 for my deductible on the MRI that I had Monday PLUS whatever my share of a Neurology visit is.

You seem like a nice enough lady, but most of your posts have led me to believe that you've been very sheltered in life.

This. Your insurance will send you an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) that will detail out what the gross amount was, what they covered, and what part is your share. As retro says, this is not a bill.

The hospital/physician should bill you directly. The amount should agree to the EOB - if it does not, do not submit any payment until the difference is fixed, otherwise you could end up paying more money than you are supposed to.

Um, I didn't know squat about insurance until a couple years ago when I had a bunch of hospital visits & tests to cover... and even then, I only got to understand it as well as I did because my father owns an insurance agency and walked me through it. Health insurance can be a fairly complicated process to deal with, especially if your provider isn't great...

To clarify, my comment wasn't specifically directed at this thread. It is a culmination of threads over time. A lot of people don't understand insurance...but I'd personally be thankful my child received medical attention, even if it meant that I had to mortgage my house. I have a friend whose child has battled cancer twice. The medical bills outstanding are over a million dollars. I'll pay my $1000 out of pocket and be happy about it. ;)

Medical insurance is a fail safe for major problems. Unfortunately too many folks without insurance drive up hospital costs for everyone else. I was very fortunate in 2006 to have tremendous health insurance. They covered 58 days of hospitalization including 31 days in ICU at 2 different hospitals. They even covered the air ambulance to Cleveland. Total bill was over $422,000. I paid nothing. Today even with medicare it costs me over $5,000 a year but I don't get any bills from anybody. You get what you pay for and the last test for my bone marrow was over $7,000. It is all a matter of when you pay.

Americans just love to BELIEVE that they aren't paying for something. We like to BELIEVE that costs for everything are not passed along to us, even though if we bothered to do any investigation, we'd see it.

Everyone - everywhere - pays for their health care. Some pay huge tax bills and BELIEVE they aren't paying for health care. Others pay huge markups and insurance premiums and deductables and myraids of other charges and want to BELIEVE their employer is paying for their health care. Iit's all smoke and mirrors.

Short Version: Nothing is free, anywhere.
