Studies show that the death penalty is not a deterrent.

And to add: I don't care that he was abused as child in the sense that it should have any bearing on his sentencing. I care about what happened to him as a child because certain cycles of behavior need to be broken. Education and change is key.

Great post, Grace.

How can studies show what is a deterrent in someone's mind? Honestly.

I know for me, consequences that are not pleasant, that I do not want happening to me, serve as deterrents, the death penalty being one of them. ;)

Ya know that man (Jessica's dad) is holding on to his baby girl by making her death and the details known in his media appearances so that folks will realize these shits like Couey need to be put to death. Justice is served in this case.

And I don't care how abused he was as a kid, lots of kids are abused and they don't grow up to be criminals. Couey deserves to die.

Her dad is awesome. Jessica Marie Lunsford Foundation

And there are plenty of people who grew up abused and somehow manage not to victimize others.

Using that logic, no study would be valid. ;)

Here are some statistics if anyone cares to look at them.

I don't completely believe that about you. You just said that the reason you do not kill is BECAUSE of the death penalty?
I didn't. I said that consequences that are not pleasant, that I do not want happening to me, serve as deterrents, the death penalty being one of them.
People who commit horrendous crimes don't care about the death penalty. I don't believe they sit and think, "Should I really rape this 9 year old? I might be killed for it." They don't fear death (nor the consequences of an afterlife).
Right but for people that do fear consequences, consequences are a deterrent.
As far as people that are just straight up evil you are right they don't care about the consequences. But there are killers out there that do know the difference between right and wrong and consequences do serve as a deterrent or they would not even bother trying to get away with or covering up their crime. They do not want to face the consequences. They want their cake and eat it too. But it will not happen because justice will always prevail, either in this life or the next. (always in the next)

You wouldn't kill, no matter if there was a death penalty or not.
You are right, I probably would never murder someone.

I would however kill someone in self dense or in war.

I hope his death is painful.
If his peers in the correctional facility have anything to do about it, it will be. But on Death Row, he will be on solitary confinement for the rest of his days, never to have contact with other inmates, from what I have read. Dangit!:mad

If I'm Mark Lunsford, I pull a Samuel Jackson in "A Time to Kill" on him.

I'm gonna say one thing, and then stay out of this one. You people are all saying "Burn his ass, torture him, give him a slow painful death".

That makes you people no better than what he did.

Of course this is a horrible thing, very sad, and that girl didn't deserve any of it, but no matter what we do to this man, it will NOT bring her back. And you have to think, even though he did all that to the little girl, imagine what kind of guilt he must be feeling. Knowing that he did that to a little girl, and that he's going to die for it. I can't even imagine what he must be feeling right now.

You are assuming he is feeling guilt. And even if he is, what does it change? It does not change the fact that his choices/action have consequences.
