Make the pain stop! Pretty please!

I've been dealing with neck, back, and hip pains for years now. This last November I finally started going to the chiro again for it. The chiro helped A LOT with my middle back, but my neck and lower back/hip area are getting worse. About a month ago I went into urgent care because the pain was so bad. The doc said it was my sciatic nerve so I got hydrocodone and flexeril for that pain. Tonight I ended up having to go in again and this time was in full blown tears walking like I was 120 years old needing a cane. It sucked. This doc actually felt around my lower back and thinks it's a herniated disk. So tonight I was put on the same thing again and told to get to my doc asap to figure it out.

Next week I have to get a nerve test done because I was told injections, either epidural or spinal block, was recommended because the chiropractic care isn't helping.

All I know right now is that I don't like looking weak to my children and I don't want to be in this much pain anymore.

UGH help!

I'm going insane and just needed to vent about it.

Anita I'm in the same boat as you. I visited my doctor yesterday and this is a message I sent someone about that visit.

" So I Go To The............... ........... doctor today to discuss the results of all the tests and it isn't pretty. He's referring me to a neurosurgeon because my lower spine is in real bad shape and is causing a lot of pressure on a bunch of nerves which if left untreated could and probably will cause paralysis. He was quite shocked when he read the reports and asked me how I could stand all the pain on a constant basis to which I replied " you learn how to adjust. " The thought of another major surgery with numerous very high risks isn't making me a happy boy.

One of the worst things about this is I have to stick with my job due to the disability insurance I know I'll need. If I quit and start somewhere else the new insurance company will not cover an existing illness for the first year. I'm not used to being backed in a corner. I've always been able to " fight " my way out of a jam but not this time and I don't feel good about it at all. "

Have you had any MRI's or CT Scans done? Those would probably show exactly what the problem is as they did for me.

I haven't yet, but that's what the doc recommended tonight. I've had it said to me before, but I always pushed it off hoping the chiro would help, but it's time to get this figured out.
Anita I know exactly how you feel. I did the same thing for years but had it checked two years ago. The X-Rays showed some degeneration but since then it's taken off. The constant pain keeps digging at you and it makes life miserable.... you just want it to go away. There are meds out there that can help a lot. Has you're doc given you anything that's better than an aspirin? If not talk to him about it.

I hope it's an easy fix. Back pain is horrible =[

When the sciatic nerve is involved it's never an easy fix. Leaving it untreated is not a good thing because paralysis is a possibility depending on the severity so surgery is the usual option. That is another story as far as risks are concerned. Life isn't fair sometimes.

Follow the doctor's orders. I feel your pain.

I am sure as you get older it does get worse as you continue to aggrevate it.

I was diagnosed with sciatica about 30 years ago because of slipped discs & herniated discs in my lower back. The medical doctor was painting a picture of surgeries and the like or eventual paralysis. I went to a chiropractor for a few years afterward. I learned that the back needs as much support as possible from your stomach muscles. I worked to strengthen those and have been very careful of how I do any lifting. The idea of surgery scares me to death. Most days I experience the worst pain when I first get up. I play tennis, bowl, and lift pretty much anything I need to but I am always mindful of my back.

Fred I'm a big guy but I'm very active as you know due to all the work I do taking care of these three farm yards. I also have a very physical job which involves heave lifting and being on my feet all day. A good portion of my time at work also involves being hunched over and that is one of the worst things I can do. I was entertaining going back into car sales to take the load off physically but as I mentioned it wouldn't be a good thing. Unfortunately my situation might only be solved with surgery. Time will tell but like you I don't like the idea one bit. It's progressed to the point where I walk cockeyed and I'm getting tired of looking at the world sideways. :24:

Yea my X-rays show I have moderate degeneration in my spine, well slight in my cervical, and a 6th lumbar vertebrae which I guess was probably a initial factor in why I've had back and hip pains for so many years. These sciatic nerve/herniated disk issues have just making my already no fun back pains to make me want to crawl in a hole back pains.

I'm on hydrocodone and flexeril. There are some things I can't take due to an allergy. Not to mention I try really really hard not to have to go in and get pain meds.

Oh and to make matters more fun. I was scared to go to bed last night because I kept feeling like I was going to faint. Everything got distant, I got dizzy, vision got blurry, and started to get super hot. That was not fun.

That's what one doc told me my issue was.
I didn't know until last night that the two were commonly related.

I've always had problems with my back and have been to all types of treatment for it. The Chiropractor I went to for along time but I found myself becoming dependant on him and that it almost made it worse. The best treatment I had was something called a scanner, here's some info on it if you haven't heard of it :

Nice new fancy name for a Tens machine. They work depending on the nature of the problem.

I am not sure how big an ole boy you are but I understand. Constantly aggrevating it and being on your feet all the time is probably the worst thing for an irritated sciatic nerve. Of course not being a spring chicken contributes to that as well. You eventually may not have a choice other than surgery.

I hooked up my wife's tens for her before she left for work. Her's is in her neck & shoulder.
I love my tens machine. The problem is it just gives me relief while it's switched on and I'm sure not going to have that thing going all day. I use it for about 1 hour per evening just before I hit the rack. Oh.. I have it set so high my muscles twitch like a chicken with it's head cut off. :thumbup
