It's a redback, think you Americans call them black widows. Apparently the South Africans have another name for them as well. I decided to put this spider up as it's prettier and I had one crawl down my arm when I was in Australia.:D

The Black Widow spiders in the US have the red hourglass shape on it's underside.

Yeah Peter we have lots of these bloody red backs down here. I believe that they are related to the black widow, both build parallel webs.

I have seen some big buggers in my time & I must admit I am very careful in areas where they build nests as a bite could kill.

To be honest I wasn't as worried about them as much as I thought I'd be. They were everwher but arn't agressive, they only bite if you really piss them off. I used to sit outside with them on the underside of my chair and they didn't bother me. The huntsman spiders were the real problem even though the're not poisonous. They have a nasty habit of falling on your head when you walk through a doorway!:eek

Huntsman spiders don't really bother me, but you should see my wife - she hates spiders & freaks out. The spider that we do have to be really careful of is the White Tail, it can leave you with rotting flesh & a wound that won't heal

Yeah, I got one of those on my towel, they look so harmless too. I expect you have to watch out for the Sydney funnelwebs where you are too. I didn't actually come across one of them in the wild but I heard enough horror stories about them, stuff like the're so aggresive they try and attack you on site and how they can even bite through bone!:eek
....or may be that was the Aussies trying to shit up the Pommie!:D

I don't know about the biting through bone - doubt it - but they are very aggressive, at certain times of the year they will attack with very little provocation. Naturally it's the warmer months when we are all out mucking around in the backyard. I have killed a few of them but fortunately I live in an area where they are not so numerous - I live in the southwest of Sydney & there more of them in the northern suburbs.
