My husband's little sister once said "LOL" out loud. I almost hit her.
Theoretically, no one can learn "perfect English" (or whatever language), but an approximation of the language they hear around them. Language also changes over time. We don't speak ye olde Englishe anymore. Still, netspeak is more of a bastardization of spelling than anything else, and that's just irritating.

And people 200 years ago would say modern English is a bastardization of English.
Slang, ethnics words that are integrated, "leet speak" and they like are all valid forms of communication. Language isnt a set-in-stone thing. All language is, is a means of communcation between people, and any form of this is valid as long as you are communicating.
you don't think there's a danger of lessening our communication by all this change? if words gain different connotations and meanings before we even realise it, aren't we in danger of miscommunication?

Actually, It is already starting to become a growing problem with people using IM to right essays and reports. Many teachers complain about recieving work from students riddled with IM language, the problem is, Kids are getting so used to using it, that they start to use it in everyday life,
and anymore some even use IM when they Talk.. That is annoying
The same thing was said 200 years ago by linguists, I can assure you. We seem to be doing fine.
The problem is when words that used to cary no disrespect with them becoming extremely disrespectfull virtualy over night. Hell walk into any nursing home and listen to what the old people in there call people. They meen no disrespect by it but when they learned english that is the words that you used.
