I'm on it but only because I signed up to see what it was like. I get the feeling it's only any good if you're someone in the business world - for those of us who are receptionists and administrators, what's the point?

Networking is always handy, regardless of what capacity you serve in the business world, be it a mailroom clerk, a receptionist, or the Chief Executive Officer of a Fortune 500 company. Many jobs in todays market are obtained through networking. I'm not sure about in England, but that's very true in the USA.

Yup.. I am on it and have been for years.. A few cool things about LinkedIn

  • You do not have to leave your friends open ( visible ) for people to poach. This is key to getting CEO's and COOs on your list of friends..
  • This social network is really not one that you have to be deep into a friendship to add someone to the list. Think of it more a business relationship or co-worker relationship unlike Facebook but a bit like OTz..
  • I know many company owners who constantly review contacts as potential candidates for jobs. Its the new way to find work in many industries, when the friend or a friend of a friend has failed.
  • There is a job posting section that you can review to see if you match any jobs..
  • Try to diverse the industries contacts you get.. Hence I have friends that have their barber, receptionists at most companies, shipping or QA people on the list.. I even have a friend that has his favorite chef on the list.
  • Even if people close their friends lists you will be amazed who knows who, of that they have met them. It will show you the connections between John ( Chef ), Bill ( Engineer ), Jane ( receptionist ) and you..

Extremely.. It's how I got my last 3 jobs.. I have quite a few people from England on my list.


One thing to note, not everyone accepts your invites and that's OK.. It's funny how I have had pending invitations for 3 years and then I hear the person is laid off and all of a sudden they accept my invite. I can only imagine what they are looking for :D
