In the end I would just settle for the dog, for three reasons:
1. It doesn't cost the earth in play toys or cat nip.
2. They don't have mood swings or lash out at you.
3. All they ask of you is to take them for a walk at least once a day, not a lift, not to be stroked for endless hours in front of the fire. which in turn means the dog could be part of your own fitness plan.
