Lens Advice Needed!

I know there are people on here who know their way around a camera, so I'm looking for a little advice

I have a Canon 1000D, I've had it for over a year and I love it to pieces. I've always used the standard lens that came with it, but recently I've been thinking about getting a macro lens, because I love macro photography and although the standard lens isn't awful, obviously you can get even better results with a proper lens for it.

So... what should I be looking for? I found one on ebay just now, a macro lens that is compatible with Canon and has a 58mm thread size, whatever that means, and it's a tenner. Is that decent? And what does the thread size mean?

I'm going to say yes. It looks like a lens you just screw on the front. I think. I just assumed there was one way of doing it haha

i used some for a while with pretty decent results,but you have to experiment though......and they lower your depth of field quite a bit

I was looking at the photography tips thread and saw the photo you posted of a fly, really close up? That's the kind of thing I'd like to be able to try, getting details on things that you can't normally see

Also, a guy on Flickr once mentioned something about macro... cables? Or wires? Or optics? Something that sounded a bit different. Does that sound like anything you know about?

HK how much are you willing to spend? If it's on the lower side then as Ian mentioned the filters work. If you want to achieve excellent results then you must look at a dedicated lens which is what Ian uses. It's either or but remember one thing... you get what you pay for. If you buy a lens you use it for years. If you buy filters you use then a few times and then buy a lens.

I think I'd rather invest in a lens. It makes sense to buy something I can keep using, rather than buying a filter then buying a lens eventually anyway

guyz is right there,the actual lens is a better option,and you'd probably end up getting one...when i got mine i bought a set of filters to fit it:ninja

what you'll find is that if you set your camera on a tripod etc your pictures will be that sharp that you can crop into them
