They just have to make that decision and dont turn back....its a pattern..just keeps getting worse.
The "mate"..is supposed to be ones best friend...We sure wouldnt tell our drinking buddies what they can do..or friends that happen to be women for that matter..so where does one get the right of "owning" his wife ,if he dont like what she does then leave..but dont have her conform to his rule
But yet we have couples that celebrate 20 years of marriage...when the last 15 are lopsided..its not really a marriage per say..but more of an arrangement

My mother stayed in it for 21 years before she finally had the strength to leave my dad...and even then it was only b/c he was in jail and had lost his job so he was no longer the breadwinner for the household. Best realization she ever made was realizing that she COULD make it on her own and that staying together "for the kids" wasn't reasonable.
