I always am getting my nails dirty

I bit my nails all my life so never gave a damn but now that I quit it would be nice that they did not look disgusting

Is there an easy way other than to try and scrap to clean out underneath? Such as a quick soak in something???

I can scrape but it is not working a lot of the time. I have taken showers and some nails get clean in the process by not all. I finally had to cut back a decent nail to get to where I could try to scrape away the dirt. They look awful and then are so damn short to begin with trimming them way back is not an option

I'm the wrong person to ask about such things because I'm not girly and I work on a farm so I have dirty fingernail syndrome as well. I have noticed, though, that my fingernails are nice and clean after giving several horses a bath. You could try that. :D

I dip a q-tip in bleach and wipe under my nails if they start to look discolored. Works great and it's stuff people typically have around the house.

There is also some nail stuff out there but I don't know what it's called.

Bleach? Really? Isn't that stuff a bit harsh? I can't stand the smell either.

Well yea it would be harsh if you soaked your fingers in it.

All you are doing is swipping a q-tip under the nail part.

I dunno may not work for everyone, but works great for me.

You missed the part where I bit my nails down to the quick all my life. They don't stick out past the end of the finger as a result so you can not swab underneath I don't believe

They have nail scrubbers that you can get. It's a bristle brush just smaller for your fingers. Use soap and scrub.

The nail brush is probably your best bet. And Anita- you could also soak your hands in some diluted lemon juice to get rid of discoloration.

ok now here we go

thanks HTC

That is a start

I guess I have to repeat that my nails are too short and too crappy a condition to let grow out where I could put a Q-Tip under them. So anything that would involve soaking would be the thing I am looking for

  1. Step 1
When you wash your hands, be sure to massage the soap lightly into the area around your nails and cuticles, then rinse well.
  2. Step 2
Rub moisturizer onto your hands, rubbing some around your nails and into your cuticles.
  3. Step 3
Soak your nails in soapy water for five minutes once a day. After the soak, lightly scrub the surface and undersides of your nails with a soft-bristled nail brush.
  4. Step 4
Clean under your nails when needed with a cotton-wrapped orange stick or a gentle plastic tooth cleaner such as Stim-U-Dent.

do something old fashioned and instead of using a dishwasher wash the dishes in the sink(Palm Olive dish detergent and a drop of bleach). This will even get a mechanics hands clean. Something i have my husband do when i need his hands to not look like they've been in oil all day.

I've been gardening a lot today and even after a long soak in a bath I still have dirt under my nails, so I'll be doing the sharp white pencil under them.

I hand wash all my dishes

There are not enough left behind to use to bother with a dishwasher

Plus when I was single back almost 30 years ago I never bothered with a dishwasher. I am finicky that I do not like a dirty kitchen so I clean up and never leave dishes in the sink either. When your kitchen is dirty that way the rest of the house goes downhill. IMO

And how many times do I have to tell you my nails are really short. I bit them horribly and so they are about 2/3 the length of normal nails. They look better than when I bit them for sure but still way too short. Nothing I can do about that but I would like them to at least not look filthy
