H.O. That's enough. Having an uncontrollable mental disease such as OCD is not weird. It's not stupid. Have a little more compassion for people who can't help themselves in those types of situations.

Whats next you're going to tell us autism is stupid? Just chill out. Arguing over this is fucking stupid.

They don't LITERALLY scrub their skin off, it's an expression. And having a mental disorder is not stupid, that was pretty rude.

Actually, some of them do. My friend has severe OCD, to the point where this past summer, she thought only two rooms in her house were clean enough for her to be in. She used to wash her hands so often, her skin was raw and bleeding. With therapy and medicine, she switch to hand sanitizer. But she came as close to scrubbing her skin off as I've ever seen.

Firstly, it would surprise ppl to know, just how many ppl are actually unaware of OCD and how it happens.

It is stress-related, built up over a period of time and ppl have varying copulsions, for different reasons.

My son is an OCD sufferer & has autism. My friend's daughter has OCD and autism too and a few other friends of mine have children with the same and more.

I don't feel H.O was deliberately going out of his way to come across uncaring - ppl just genuinely don't know as much about it as others.

I have to wash my hands more than you would expect. I also agree with Amber, there are OCD sufferers who do actually end up making their hands so red raw with the obsessive washing - some go to the extent of bleaching them too and using such boiling water, which causes the raw factor.

OCD is thousands of different obsessions, for different ppl at different times.

Ppl can't be blamed for not realizing the full extent of certain things. There are so many conditions that are misconstrued, just through conflicting info as much as anything. :)

They don't all go on meds, only if they feel that's all they can do for themselves. Also, not everyone would agree to taking meds, which is their perrogotive too, as some meds cause bad symptoms sometimes, cos they are too aggressive for the body. There are no meds for autism.

Thanks once again, Freespeech. I was trying to tell them that I wasn't startin up an argument, just stating my opinion about it. I don't much about it, but it's confusing to me.

That's Ok. I have come across so many ppl asking what OCD is, when I say that with just those initials.

They still don't grasp the concept of it once I explain it anyway.
That's because it is hard to absorb details of things you have never come across - to a person, or ppl with no connection with OCD in any way, it does appear to be 'abnormal' and many sufferers of OCD would say the same about it too. :)

My friend went off her meds this summer without doctor aproval because she thought she could handle it herself. That's when she deemed her house unclean. I've never hugged her before (and I'm always hugging my friends) because she panics if anyone gets near her. She had a class with my sister and someone sneezed once during class. She had to move acroos the room and stayed there until it was "safe" for her to move back.

True. When I said that OCD was stupid, I was saying it in a way that it was not normal for the average person. It's kinda dumb that people have to live like that, but I believe some misunderstood me earlier.

Yeah, I have heard of this.

I carry anti-bac gel around with me too.

My son's obssessions aren't like mine though - his are not cleanliness related and he actually has more than I do. Mine are more OCB, cos they don't run my life practically - my son's do.

It's fine that you didn't understand, but it was still a rude comment to say that. I don't know if I considered some of the things I do OCD exactly, considering I've never brought it up with a doctor, but it's still not nice to go, "That's stupid". I never understood cancer 100% until my grandmother got it, but I didn't say to her, "Damn, that's stupid".

That reminds me of Mitch Hedberg.

"Alcoholism, is a disease, but it's the only disease that you can get yelled at for having. 'Dammit Otto, your an alcoholic.' 'Dammit Otto, you have Lupis.' One of those two doesn't sound right."

Mitch Hedberg was the man, RIP

My daughter was an obsessive hand washer for a while, but she didn't damage her skin. Her hands were usually red though. I don't see the connection but it was about the time my wife and I were separated.. A few talks with a therapist and she got past it.
