So Congress is considering killing the 1Dollar bill in favor of a 1 Dollar Coin.

A nonpartisan, investigative arm of Congress is calling for the United States to stop printing dollar bills and switch entirely to $1 coins instead.

Why? Because the Government Accountability Office believes it could save Uncle Sam money.

A $1 coin typically costs about 30 cents for the U.S. Mint to produce, but then the government can sell them to Americans for a dollar each. That financial gain is called seigniorage, and over a period of 30 years, it could save the U.S. government about $4.4 billion, the GAO said. These coins typically last around 30 years.

I think this time they plan on not giving the people the option.. Basically doing what they did in Canada and removing the Dollar from circulation completely and only having Coins..

Will it work, I have no idea, but it did here...

Coin vending machine operators love these things.. So they will rapidly change the coin slots and paper money takers to NOT accept Dollar bills..

Im ok with this idea. A dollar is pretty much change nowadays anyway, but now all vending machines will have to accept dollar coins including self serve lotto which don't have coin slots.

Works great in Australia. They don't have pennies in Oz either. Smallest coin is 5 cents. Smallest bill is $5.

Americans cling to some silly traditions for no good reason other than "that's the way we've done it for 200 years".

Yup, same here... We killed the Penny about 6 months ago and while its still in circulation, it will soon be gone.. As it gets collected by the banks it gets sent back to the central bank that does not issue more, but rather and out the equivalent in larger denomination..

As well we just changed our $100, $50 and $20 to a plastic type of money.. It almost feels like the old paper ones but has that glossy feel to it.. It does not tear nor wear as fast and will last much longer..

You have to be smarter than your coinage Dana, lol. Seriously, I understand what you are saying. When we were first in Australia, I collected the $1 coins unintentionally with my American mindset on coins. But by day two I had the "Aha!" moment of not having to pull my wallet out for a dollar or four. Truly, it works far better than what we have now. You'll like it if we ever do it.

We Americans are just resistant to change. IF it happens, it'll take some getting used to, but we WILL get used to it eventually.
