do you know the significnce of the skull carvings

Nope. Some googling has revealed lots of info on the church but not much on the skulls or skull and crossbones.

On the 'we shall' I found one person's comment which sounded plausible:

Church humour can often be difficult to spot but outside high on the wall nearest to the Hall is a sundial with the word "Wee Shail" engraved above it. I needed an explanation we shall soon (sun) die (dial). Humorous, macabre or just a statement of the inevitable? The prime place to view this is from the dressing room next to the state bedroom – intentional or coincidental?

Some more googling found some teachers notes pdf which contained this:

classical details on east gable
(opposite end to main door). Added
in the early 1700s, the central fea-
ture is a sundial, with the words Wee
shall, to which the onlooker is invit-
ed to supply soon die all (sundial).

Over the top are hourglasses, a
reminder that time is passing quick-
ly, and this is reinforced by skulls
and crossbones.

Thanks Ian You mentioning the bridges reminds me that I was waiting there ages as a swan approached - wondering if it would fly down or not beneath the arches. In the end, it seemed to change its mind and went back the other way.
