Judging a book by its cover.

People are very judgemental. You never know whether the person you see is a pauper or rich.

My grandfather always wore those old shirts & pants you can buy at the uniform store used for 3 or 4 dollars per piece. He always had a spit cup with tobacco juice in it and really looked gross at best. The last two houses he bought he negotiated with the realtor and paid cash for both out of a paper bag.

I believe I inherited some of his don't care attitude about how I dress. Since I live in the deep south it is warm almost year around. I rarely wear anything except shorts & golf shirts or T-shirts. I had an experience when jewelry shopping for my wife where the young man in the nice suit behind the counter nudged me in the direction of the clearance jewelry and showed no interest in showing me the diamond jewelry I was there to purchase. I decided to leave. Since it was a chain store I decided to drive to the other mall to the other store where the older gentleman behind the counter was very helpful in me making my purchase. I explained to him about my experience at the other store and he said he has heard it before. Sometimes salespeople are too quick to judge.

It's funny. I had saved cash before I divorced my husband because I didn't want him to know what I was doing. This was from the OT I was working-we had separate accounts and I just put aside my OT monies in a safe deposit box. When I moved out into an apartment I had no bed-just a couch and I went into a very nice furniture store to buy and pretty fancy cherrywood, queen-size bed. I was in short-shorts (it was a very hot day) and a skimpy top. I could not get a saleman to wait on me quickly and when they did they did not want to deliver the bed that nite! Mind you I was paying CASH! They probably thought I was one of these people gonna take years to pay off the bed and hear I had several thousand dollars in CASH! I never bought another thing from that store again............. Guess what-they are out of business........

I believe in just be you and don't judge by looks
if you dress what some people might refer to as a bum doesn't mean anything
if you dress really tidy and expensively doesn't mean you have money or are smart
but unfortunately however you dress expect to be judged that way because most people do judge by that

It's funny you mention this b/c there's someone on this forum that I judged a few years ago based on a particular topic they posted. I read the thread and automatically judged them as being the kind of person that I wouldn't associate w/ and would have nothing in common with. Once I actually took the chance to get to know them I realized that I had been completely unfair in my judgment and actually had a lot in common w/ them. I'm glad I didn't stick w/ my initial unfair judgment.

That's very true,sad but true,people don't see a person for who they really are,and it's really a shame.

I was never too worried about my physical appearance either. Heck, I often wear t-shirts until they disintergrate and blow away in the wind.

I can't ever say I have judged a book (person) by there cover. But I have had feelings about people that have never failed me. In those cases I have kept my distance and kept private while remaining civil and friendly. Rather safe than sorry and it has always threated me right to this day.

I will say that there have been a few times where I didn't pay attention to my gut feeling about someone and ended up regretting it. The first time it happened, it ended up w/ me having to file a stalking report (unfortunately, nothing much was done b/c back then "internet stalking" wasn't really taken seriously).

It is hard not to have preconceived notions on somebody by the way they look. Personally, I usually will have an idea of who I am dealing with BUT I keep in mind that nothing is ALWAYS as it seems ... including people. With that in mind, I try to treat anyone I meet with the due respect that I ask others to give me. With that, I have been pleasantly surprised by some, and with others my gut feelings were accurate.
