There's nothing worse than having a job that you hate, but you can't quit because you need the money.

Hey, forty or more hours a week at a job you dislike really stinks. There's only 168 hours within a week, after all.

People who have serious issues with depression often have exaggerated negative beliefs about themselves, and their self-esteem suffers as a result. Having a boss who's a jerk can really aggrevate feelings of depression and low self-worth. So yeah, a job can make depression even more difficult to deal with.

I take the negative anger from my job, and apply it directly to the freeweights.. As I am getting older, I sometimes throw mud, but at least I feel better.. :)

If someone just doesn't feel like going to work, they still have to go. But if someone is so depressed that they can't work, than not going to work is a better idea. Of course, having a boss who doesn't understand clinical depression makes it hard, as he or she will insist that you come into work anyway. But more and more supervisors nowadays are understanding how terrible clinical depression can be.

I'm self-employed and own a gym..travel a lot. Keeps me from becoming depressed; I would probably fail at a regular 9-5.

I think jobs can totally contribute to depression.

For my job (I'm an auditor - and no, not taxes :p), we are sometimes expected to pretty much set aside our life for the job. During our "busy season" (January 15th - March 15th), we are expected to maintain an average chargeable hours of 55+ each week. (Which btw is more work than it sounds - that's only 55 hours we charge to the client. We work a lot more than that).

Because it's winter time, this often means that for 6 days out of the week, we don't see the sun. There are literally days where I have not felt a drop of sunlight because it was dark when I left, dark when I came home, and we spend the day working in a room without windows & sometimes eat at our desks. That alone is enough to make people depressed.

Depression occurs when you are not mentally strong. There are many ways to overcome depression like exercising, walking, playing, yoga, etc. Yoga is a very good exercise to overcome depression. If something gives you depression, it would be better for you to leave it for something and then try again, sticking to one thing that ain't happening will always give you depression. Depression is the main cause of weight gain.

You have no clue what you are talking about. But then time will tell if you are just shit stirring.

For some depression can be dealt with by the means you suggest. But for many it is a result of a chemical imbalance and no matter what one tries to do they will still be depressed. For many of those medication can get the brain wired back right. For others nothing works.

Actually, we shouldn't be so quick to dismiss what Holmes is saying. Far too many people in this country want the latest and greatest pharmaceutical remedy to address their depression. Yes, there are some whose depression is so severe they do require pharmaceutical remedies but most people don't just immediately fall into that degree of depression overnight. It is an insidious process and the actions that Holmes has proposed go a long way toward preventing the progression of depression. Just as laughter results in an immediate release of endorphins (the body's natural morphines), so then does stinkin' thinkin' result in the immediate release of chemicals that impair one's sense of well being....dopamine, seratonin, cortisol etc. There is a mind-body connection and folks need to recognize this. If you catch and correct the stinkin' thinkin' and take steps to correct it early, you can often times prevent the descent into depression. A job can be a great source of stress and frustration that can lead to depression. If leaving the job is not an option, then finding outlets for that stress and frustration is necessary and generally the best thing is some sort of physical activity. It takes those negative chemicals and puts them to good use. In many instances, medications can be an adjunct to a lifestyle change to get you back on a healthy footing. But meds shouldn't be a permanent solution unless there is evidence of physical causes of chemical imbalance.

Sorry to burst any bubbles...but Holmes is a spammer who just hasn't gotten around to posting his links yet, LOL There should be a link for a fitness site coming in the next few days. But I'm sure whatever source he copy and pasted from has valuable information.
