Girls having boys names is nothing new.

Shirley is originally a boys name. It only became a girl's name after Charlotte Brontë used it for the title character in the book Shirley and Victorians loved the idea of a female Shirley.

I don't mind ambiguous names like Alex or Sam, but Maxwell feels like a step too far. Even Max by itself is a bit too masculine for me, but Maxwell.... ew.
