Is this wrong?

So a couple months back my neighbor across the hall gets evicted, his belongings are locked up in the attic of the building and the landlord told us that if he doesn't pay his back rent within 30 days he is going to throw all of the guys things away and that we can take from it whatever we want, so It's been about 2 months now and the guy hasn't paid his back rent or made any attempt to get his things, asked the landlord about it again and he says he doesn't care, so I just looted the SHIT out of his stuff, grabbed a TV, a shit ton of CD's and books, is it wrong that I did this? He didn't pay his rent or make any attempt to get it back, I see no reason for all of it to get thrown away.

Here the law is 30 days and ownership switches to the land owner/landlord. That even covers property that's left on your property.

Beyond the law, though, I don't think what you did is wrong - the stuff now belongs to the landlord, and he legally has the right to give away whatever he wants.

The local storage unit places around here have frequent sales and whatnot for this exact type of thing...

SouthernGirl is correct, I just looked it up and found this:

The guy left his things in the hallway and didn't come back for it, it was later moved to the attic and the attic door locked to prevent anyone from going through his things, The landlord said that after 30 days if he doesn't get his stuff back then we could do what we wanted with it, so legally we are fine, BUT as I said if he comes back for his stuff I will give every bit of it back to him.

I wouldn't sweat it.
After two months I highly doubt he'll be back.

If I was the landlord and the laws are as stated I would have called up a place to get them donated to.

I still think it is wrong

Not passing judgment as I was not there but I doubt I would do the same.

Hey I totally understand where you're coming from, that's why I made this thread I wanted to get some opinions, as I'm kinda conflicted about it, I have no problem returning it to him if he comes around, whether there's a legal obligation or no, I'm not a thief.

Missed the part of you giving stuff back

I got no problem with that

One can assume the guy is a deadbeat scum bag but hard to judge from a distance with out not knowing the particulars

The guy is definitely a deadbeat scumbag, he didn't pay his rent for 5 months straight, the old landlord died and he tried to tell the new landlord that he'd paid the dead on in full, I had a chat with him the day before he was evicted and he was bragging to me about getting 5 months free rent out of all this.

If the situation was reversed and you were the deadbeat, would you be okay w/ someone else having your stuff???

Me, personally, I think it's not right...but if you're covered legally, then so what. ;)

Well I wouldn't try to use a man's death to weasel my way out of paying my debts either, that's pretty low IMHO, but as I've said about 5 times now if he comes back for his stuff I will give every last item back to him.
