both artists and photographers have to consider many of the same things, such as light, shadow composition and colour

i'll use this as an example

I think photography can be art. Obviously not all photography is gallery-worthy in the same way that I could draw you a picture of a horse and it probably wouldn't end up in the Louvre, but it's still something that requires both skill, practice and like art, a natural comprehension of the basics.

There are some people who will never be good photographers and have to read articles about composition, whereas for other people composition is something inate, generally explained by 'it just looks right' :p

Photography IS art. I dabbled with it a bit, years ago. Finding the perfect setup, waiting for the sunlight to be just what you want, things like that take a lot of imagination and artistic ability. Now, with the advent of such programs as Photoshop, the artist can make a photograph do just about anything he/she wishes.

The sort of art that I appreciate isn't the splash-paint-on-something-in a haphazard-manner anyway. The art I appreciate captures people, places or things. With the people, emotion plays a big part. Now, take your camera and go capture people. That can be a challenge!

I think you chose a good bug pic to pic as art. The colours, subject, composition and of course my favourite thing to mention (bokeh) is quite appealing to me in this picture.

In summary, yes - photography can be considered art methinks.

No I didn't mean it as un-pure/pure terminology. What I meant was art to me is stuff like paintings in galleries etc. Whereas photography is an art form because it lends things from other art and uses that to help it. I'm not putting down photography at all, I'm just saying it's different .

Is photography art?

No, it isn't... but it can be

This is like asking if everything you pen to paper is art, it's not... but it could be

Now let's see if I can give my opinion on the picture above without twisting any panties...

I wouldn't consider this picture to be art, not for me.
The color is great but the composition is lacking. It looks like an above average photographer got close to a fly and snapped a picture. Yes, I understand that it takes a lot of patients and it's quite difficult to get the exposure and setting just right. So technically it's a very good picture but it doesn't tell a story.
To me, a photograph needs to convey a story or be composed in such a way to invoke emotion to be considered art. Something worthy to put in a frame and hang on your wall. And a close-up picture of a fly center frame just doesn't fall into that category.

Easy there cowboy... I have made mistakes before... But, I'm one of those people that tend to quick reread what I type before I hit send. It's something I do for work everyday... nothing worse than looking like a dumb-ass for making a simple mistake in a professional correspondence. :D

And I'm glad you took my post in that way. It wasn't meant to be a dig or criticism... Just my observation and nothing more. And I am not a professional art critic, so my opinion only matters to me.

Is an unmade bed with condoms on it art? How about a pile of bricks? Not to me it isn't but to some some artistic critics, apparently it is. From what I can gather, art is in the eye of the beholder, people who have done too many drugs or people who have completely lost the plot.

I think so. I can't sing, or draw, and I'm way to impatient to learn to play an instrument, and I use photography to express myself. I like to make collages, though. Art is an expression of ones self, and I express myself with it. So my answer is yes.
