There is an unwritten law in theatre that neutral blacks are not costume. I believe this is wrong.

I am doing an inclass essay and I am stumped, I can't go any further then I already have, I need more opinions and ideas..

I need something to go off..

Discuss please?

What do you believe?

Or have I completely mucked that up?

not quite, it's just saying that is wearing nothing of a particular/definable out fit acceptable as a costume? Would you call wearing all black a costume or do you think they have ot have definable clothing?

I think black can definitely be a costume.
What if you're supposed to be night?

Or what if you wanted the audience to focus on the character and what the character is portraying instead of some loud costume?

ok so you are saying u disagree with that idea and u say that if you are wearing some thing out of the ordinary that defines it as a costume...

it could be both to me really. I mean I guess in some really progressive performance you could have someone be night and not have a line?

Or you could have someone that is in black or some other neutral give a moving performance and lose site of what the the actor is wearing and focus the energy on the performance itself?

I'm no use

that's the whole reason its unwritten cause its only used by some theater artist... being unwritten allows a bending of the rules giving u space on what can be and what is not

I'm saying that I believe neutral blacks are a costume, you decided to wear this for a performance, therefore it is your costume

also whether or not it has defining features does not make the costume have no meaning...like black could signify night, assassin, etc

Do you think that if someone was to perform in just a plain black outfit that this would be a costume or not?

I would have to definitely lean towards it is more of a costume than not a costume. I think it can make a powerful performance given the right setting and the right actor.

I hope that helps tildy -hugs-
