For you parents out there...

I'm the most level headed guy you'll ever meet. I'm not afraid of the dark, scary movies don't bug me, and when things go south at work, I'm the one who keeps on keep'en on...

Now I have a kid at home....

I can't even explain it, I was watching a safety video of some people who teach infants to swim, and I started feeling all panicky (sp?). It wasn't to the point where I was hyperventilating or anything, it was just a crazy tightness in my chest I'm not used to having. I actually made up an excuse to leave the room because I didn't want to watch it anymore. Sometimes I'll have a ... 'bad dream' (I guess you would call it) and I'll have to get up in the middle of the night just to go make sure he's still breathing. ... WTF?!! Little dude is ruining me. haha

Is this a normal first time parent thing? How long does it last?

Scott, even as a non parent I was paranoid about my nephew when I was living with my brother. I don't know how many times I got up and went into his room to make sure he was still breathing and sleeping like the little angel he is (evil angel).

Perfectly normal, IMO. Every parent is going to be a little paranoid about their creation.

It's perfectly normal .. just wait until they want to spend the night with someone else or go somewhere with them and you have to TRUST someone else with them.

Talk about nerve racking.

Then you start worrying about them driving. OH GOD

Yep, its normal! :)

I find myself constantly worrying about my kids! Even when they are with family I still worry. Wondering and making myself sick, hoping that they are okay. I think its because IM not right there with them, holding their hand and making sure that they are okay.
Its amazing how our kids have us wrapped around their little fingers and how much we fall in love with them. :) Its definately an experience that I would never ever trade though. Love every minute of it :)

Even though you know your child is God's and is in His hands, it is still so hard to not feel exactly the way you are talking about Intruder. The feeling is your cue to the awesome responsibility and blessing that God has entrusted to you. ;)

I got that same feeling when I watched The Descent. Underground...crawling thru tight spaces...not my thing.

But on-topic I have 2 kids and it doesnt get much better. I watched the remake of Halloween last week and the girl Michael was after reminded me of my daughter and so I had to call and hear her voice after the movie was over. It doesnt go away but it gets easier to handle.

It is normal and i dont think it ever goes away i still freak out when something i see on TV could even remotely happen to my children.
I was watching a movie a few years back and my boys were younger then and the movie was about this woman who lost her child and it rally freaked me out to the point i got up half way through the movie to go and check my kids were still there telling them while they were sleeping i loved them etc.
I think its an instinct that sets in and you cant do anything about it, but the older they get the irrational fears change from simple ones to more complicated ones.
Its totally normal Dude beleive me!! lol

I agree with what the others here say, too and my son was almost 2 years old before I felt I could slack off from checking if he was still breathing LOL.

I always would go in and kiss his cheek, or forehead though every night of me going to bed.

I still look in on him now! :)

Just wondering - did you have any probs with swimming when you were young, or did a friend, or someone in your family at all? That could be why you felt like that. Or, a fear of water has been sitting in your sub-consience and you weren't aware til you were faced with something like that dvd?
