Re: Iraq War Vet: "We Were Told to Just Shoot People, and Officers Wud Take Care Of

Those are your SOP which is only known to millitary personned manning the checkpoints and civillians approaching the checkpoint might just think that its some stray flares or bullets in a war torn country.
Wrong. They drop fliers around town informing people what to do at checkpoints. Most checkpoints have signs posted. The tail Humvee in every convoy has a sign written in Arabic saying to stay back. Most of these checkpoints have local army and police working them, who go home at night and live with the local population. We've been there for 7 years, do you really think they don't know what to do by now?

Stray flares? Stray bullets? Really? That's just sheer ignorance. If somebody is shooting your direction, you're first thought isn't that it was a stray bullet.

The point is these civillians pose no threat and yet they get killed. How do you explain that?

The point is that if you ignore multiple repeated warnings to stop your vehicle and approach a checkpoint in a threatening manner, then these soldiers and Marines have every right to fire on the vehicle to defend themselves. Would you rather they just wave flowers and blow bubbles? It's real life, not some video game. Guess what? When it's your ass on the line, you'll err on the side that gets you home safe at night.

Yet again, you have no idea what you're talking about. Every point you've brought up has been debunked. You have no experience in the subject, you're just repeating nonsense talking points because you can't possibly offer an educated opinion. But you still keep arguing. You are a troll in every sense of the word.

Its called collateral damage.

And unfortunately we can't tell the difference between the enemy and civilians

Yeah, one suicide bomber will suffice.

Yeah, one suicide bomber will suffice.

I dont think you understand the mentality of these people.

These terrorists don't have rules. They will strap a bomb on a retarded child and tell the kid to walk up to US tanks or humvees.

These people hide behind crowds of citizens and fire at US military because they know the soldiers wont fire back

You're out of your element with this discussion, theres no such thing as "one suicide bomber" when suicide bombs are in the mix. no one is safe, not even their own citizens.
Our military is doing a lot more good that you seem to understand

The gist of my point is innocent civillians are being killed and I dont really know what 'escalation of force' is

In an area where exploding vehicles are commonplace, why don't you send you suggestions on how to run a check point to the Dept of Defense? :smiley24:

At what cost to your own country?

Look, I'm not saying that the initial "War on Terror" was a smart move. But we're in there, and I'll be damned if I didnt support my troops for protecting my nation and I.
On that note, we take more precautions now than before. If we wanted and needed, the middle east would not exist. We arent a super power because we dont have the weapons. We have them, we are in no place to use them, because out of the best interest for the rest of the world.
We are called tyrants, yet we havent even hinted towards a world takeover.

Our country has a long and honorable history of sacrificing for others.

Soldiers in "Wikileaks" Unit Apologize for Violence
I salute the two soldiers for being honest, brave and candid.

An Open Letter of Reconciliation and Responsibility to the Iraqi People: From Current and Former Members of the US Military
Peace be with you,
To all of those who were injured or lost loved ones during the July 2007 Baghdad shootings depicted in the "Collateral Murder" Wikileaks video:
We write to you, your family, and your community with awareness that our words and actions can never restore your losses.
We are both soldiers who occupied your neighborhood for 14 months. Ethan McCord pulled your daughter and son from the van, and when doing so, saw the faces of his own children back home. Josh Stieber was in the same company but was not there that day, though he contributed to the your pain, and the pain of your community on many other occasions.
There is no bringing back all that was lost. What we seek is to learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to tell others of our experiences and how the people of the United States need to realize what we have done and are doing to you and the people of your country. We humbly ask you what we can do to begin to repair the damage we caused.
Our government may ignore you, concerned more with its public image. It has also ignored many veterans who have returned physically injured or mentally troubled by what they saw and did in your country. But the time is long overdue that we say that the values of our nation's leaders no longer represent us. Our secretary of defense may say the U.S. won't lose its reputation over this, but we stand and say that our reputation's importance pales in comparison to our common humanity.
We have asked our fellow veterans and service-members, as well as civilians both in the United States and abroad, to sign in support of this letter, and to offer their names as a testimony to our common humanity, to distance ourselves from the destructive policies of our nation's leaders, and to extend our hands to you.
With such pain, friendship might be too much to ask. Please accept our apology, our sorrow, our care, and our dedication to change from the inside out. We are doing what we can to speak out against the wars and military policies responsible for what happened to you and your loved ones. Our hearts are open to hearing how we can take any steps to support you through the pain that we have caused.
