sounds like your phone has issues. My battery lasts at least a day of normal use, you should take it back and get a new battery I think.

Yeah, I probably should. The battery life normally deteriorates after a period of time, I've had my phone for over a year, so that might explain it. There's an apple store here in Brisbane that opened recently, so I might to go there. My iPhone is out of warranty though, so most likely I'm going to have to pay for it.

hang on a minute:

Sounds like a crock to me...
It's absolute bullshit. Think about it, if their formula for calculating the bars is wrong...then how does holding the phone differently alter the formula???????

I think the reality is a flaw in the design. They have 2 different aerials wrapping around the phone, seperated by a tiny gap top right and bottom left. holding the phone bottom left (as 99% of people probably would) connects the two aerials and interrupts the signal.

Apple need to think twice about that.

wait until the second version of it, this one has issues.

I hate to say this, but it's the 4th version of the same phone with slight new options.. If they could not get the damn thing right since 2008. The issue with the antenna has been present since the start.. You would think they would have made an effort to resolve it..

I really like the look of this phone and all but they lag by about 3 to 6 months.. :thumbdown

I don't know about that... I haven't noticed the signal strength problem at all, though I've only had it for a day. In the grand scheme of things, very few people are experiencing that issue it seems like. Then, while it isn't the best solution, but if you get a case, the problem doesn't exist.

No it's totally different to the 3GS. The 3GS works perfectly, or at least mine does, but the iPhone 4 has new screen, new camera, new design, new chipset, larger battery, much thinner case. Retro doesn't seem to be having problems with his:

It is odd that only some people are getting this problem... perhaps its not a design flaw?

Even while in productiuon phones often get new screens and cameras..

What I mean to say is that the phone itself is really a redesign of the original.. I pointed out that is has had new options added to it.. Examples.. Gyroscope and then Wifi and next version should have multi tasking on it..

The problem is a design flaw if it interferes with the signal strength.. This could be a manufcaturing issue that Apple needs to resolve and could only happen on 1 / 100 phones when an antenna touches the case, but needs attention none the less.. Seeing Mr Jobs has acknowledge the issue it must be real..

The other issue is that there are now many clones of this phone.. HTC just brought out a new version of its phone that looks very similar to this phone in the Droid family.. RIM is expected to bring out its version in September along with a pad version..

I know the phone is crap.. It's always crap if it's not Apple right Ed.. :D

Yeah that's true, but the screen on iPhone 4 is a huge leap in technology. It is a redesign of the original I guess, most Apple products tend to be.

I think a manufacturing issue is likely given that it's not everyone who's experiencing it. That crap Apple have published about the bars is an absolute crock. Personally, if you look at the antenna design, I think it's flawed and should be looked at...

lol! I hated phones until I got my first iPhone. I remember using it for the first time, having just ditched a Nokia, and thinking "damn, this is how a phone is supposed to work!". But I'm sure there are some good phones out there... I've yet to use one tho... That HTC looks pretty cool tho :)

... the battery only lasts for 1-2 hours when in use at best

when you first get a phone, any phone (just about anything rechargeable really)(i don't care what anyone says) do not plug it in right away and charge it,...turn it on and completely drain the battery. when i say completely i mean,..after it dies turn it back on and let it die again..do this until the device will not stay on, then charge it fully and attempt to drain it completely each time before charging
( i now use this technique in all my rechargeable device's and have yet to replace a battery (since my initial aggravating experience's with short battery life), now my only problem is breaking/losing the charger itself :p)

most rechargeable batteries develop a type of false charge memory which will give your battery a nagging half life that will continue to get worse. sometimes, if done properly and before the battery is too far gone it is possible to recondition the battery back to hold a decent charge,...but it will never hold a full charge again.
(i have actually accomplished this,...it is a pain in the ass)

most people just go buy another battery and repeat the process all over again. im sure we are all aware of the cost of cell phone/laptop batteries
