Ok I know I'll get shot down for being a "fanboy" blah blah blah but I caught the keynote presentation last night for the iPhone 4 and I have to say I was totally blown away. They've totally outdone themselves on this one, to the point of absurdity I'd actually say.

The new iPhone's design is stunning, usual clean lines from Apple etc, and a very clever chassis that doubles as the aerials for the various connectivity standards.

They've improved the camera, now 5 mega pixels, and now the camera is on both sides which enables video calls to be made. And there's an LED flash too, much needed as photos in anything but decent light on the previous iPhone were pretty poor. The camera is probably the most impressive feature next to the screen, called the "retina" display, which has a staggering 326 pixels per inch.

The camera also doubles as an HD video camera (yes, HD!) so you can not only shoot HD quality videos but they've also ported iMovie to the iPhone so you can now edit and export HD quality movies from your phone. Very impressive, very cool, but a bit over the top?

They added multitasking too in a way that isn't going to drain your battery.

Check it out here http://www.apple.com/iphone/

What do you all think? A bit over the top for a phone?

Bah, this is why you will never see me line up at an Apple store, these people force it unto themselves to get the latest 'fad', and yet it doesn't work properly, these suckers deserve it.

I always wait until bugs have been found and ironed out when new technology comes out

i think thats very cool, just sucks that it gives youtube users more of a reason to jump on steve jobs' dick when making a video with their iphone.

what i dont like is that nobody can be an individual everyone has to have the iphone

If someone told to me that I have to get an iPhone, I would stick theirs up where the sun doesn't shine :24:

As a rule of thumb, always wait for the second generation of Apple products. With every new design they push the boundaries to the limit, and there are always problems. Does anyone remember the 12" iBook or 12" G4? Beautiful little laptops, plagued by being ahead of their time.

To be honest, I think it's unlikely this has much to do with hand position and more to do with manufacturing problems as Endgadget state they couldn't replicate the problem:

What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.

Apple should do the right thing and give covers away for free... but I'm imagining it'll be a cold day hell before that happens, especially given Job's answer of "hold the phone differently"...

I have an iPhone 3G, (The iPhone 4 hasn't been released in Australia yet) and it hasn't exactly made me an Apple fan. It's slow, the battery only lasts for 1-2 hours when in use at best, and I have to deal with iTunes. A program which decides to regularly crap itself when I'm trying to sync my phone.

But, it does handle calls quite well. It took me a while to realize that the iPhone can actually send and receive calls. I was absolutely shocked.

sounds like your phone has issues. My battery lasts at least a day of normal use, you should take it back and get a new battery I think.

hang on a minute:

"We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising," the statement read.

Changing the display may make some people feel better, but it doesn't really fix the problem
Stuart Miles
Editor, Pocket-Lint

"Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.

"Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays two more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display four bars when we should be displaying as few as two bars.

"Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don't know it because we are erroneously displaying four or five bars.

"Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place."

Sounds like a crock to me...
