The prize has become a punchline!

According to the article, "Obama took office less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline," yet won due to "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

What extraordinary efforts had he made in that two weeks? I'd love to know. What extraordinary efforts has he made since??

He's the fifth US president to win the award, but look what a political tool it's become:

Theodore Roosevelt, 1906, Collaborator of various peace treaties

Thomas Woodrow Wilson, 1919, Founder of the League of Nations

Jimmy Carter, 2002, "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development"

And then ...................

Al Gore's organization won, but it wasn't even remotely related to peace.
"for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change"

Obama critics in this forum are all tongue-tied I guess. Like to hear from them. Maybe they gone back to sleep after hearing the news.

FTA: "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,"

Oh I get it, the World rejoices that Dubya is out of office!!!!!!!! Well, I have to toast that fact myself.:clap

Now if Barack would just work on reversing all the stuff he said he would on the campaign trail instead of appearing to carry on as if Cheney/Bush were still here, I'd be a much-happier woman.:24:

I guess Obama was not expecting this. If he could give it away he would have done so. Anyway he is richer by 1.4 million

I’m thoroughly enjoying the show, of conservative right so upset at the idea of a sitting American President winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
And it’s Democrats that hate America? :24:

Wasn't it just last week that the right were saying he lost international favor when he lost the bid for the Chicago Olympics?

And for those who say he has done nothing for world peace... What about the work he has done on securing loose nukes as Senator? If that isn't a step towards a safer world, I don't know what is...

He isn't the champion over Nuclear Proliferation Tim. Once again, it isn't a Conservative/Democrat issue, I mean you don't think that it's just another opportunity by the international community to throw rainbows? Has he really accomplished any of what he is getting the prize for? To me it's proof that they are either not looking hard enough for well deserved recipients, OR he is actually the best they can do. I had no issue with Carter getting one, but he spent a lifetime trying to build international bridges, even to the etent of not reacting to the Hatsage situation while he was actually president :24:

There's a big difference between done nothing, and done little. Until a couple of years ago nobody knew he existed except Illinois, now he's the master of the fucking universe, cures cancer, makes childbirth a pleasure and conception a wonder. Jesus almighty people have gone batshit.

But look at other Nobel Peace Prize recipients...

Martin Luther King Jr got it in 1964, long before his accomplishments were realized
The same thing with Desmond Tutu, who got the peace price for his work in apartheid even though it didn't end until 10 years after his Nobel prize.
The same can actually be said for others who have received the Nobel peace prize... It's not always about what you did, but what you are trying to accomplish. :dunno

No don't be silly. They are upset because Obama has done nothing at all to deserve such a distinguished award.

A lot of people worked for securing nukes, should they get awards as well?

except Obama isn't even trying to accomplish much of anything.

This is all quite silly, actually.

If any of you had half a brain you would see the real truth here...

Obama gets the Nobel peace prize, hours later the US conducts a missile attack against the alien's moon base. These two incidents are directly related since it was Obama that single handedly saved the world from alien attacks that were planned next week.
