I have had some horrible experiences at work with people on drugs, I find them very intimidating at times and I have been targeted by one before. Social work are always involved though and there are meetings and such before and after birth to determine if a baby will go to parents or not. In this case, for whatever reason it wasnt known and the poor kid was the one who suffered as a result. However, as someone has previously mentioned, it may be a blessing (not the way that the kid died cos thats awful) in disguise cos if no one knew the mum was on drugs, how are we to know how badly the child was being treated behind closed doors. Poor kid.

What do you do dp?

Oh wow, good work you do :D
That must be really horrible to see

At the risk of sounding like I dont care, you get used to it. I've had a discussion with one family where the Dad tried to record what I was telling him - there was an issue which was nothing to do with us nurses, it was between the parents, foster carer and social work, he didnt get this. I was explaining how it was outwith my control and he was recording me. I had to get a senior nurse to come and tell him that was unacceptable behaviour. I have a soft spot for withdrawing babies, even although they cry a lot, are sometimes bad at feeding and we dont routinely treat them for withdrawal. I really love them. It's hard dealing with the parents without being judgemental.

No I can understand that you get used to it, it is part of your every day life. Yeah I would really struggle to maintain professional when dealing with parents who put their baby in that state.
