Don't know if you've noticed but I've been gone :tooth Joe's Da passed, so we had to travel to Ireland ASAP. It as a whirlwind trip and so they really gouged us on price but what u gonna do?

We left here at 6am Thursday and arrived at Dublin 6:30am Friday. Even with 8 hours difference that's a HELL of a trip. Ma was skin a bones, was afraid to hug her too tight. Ceremony was lovely. I hadn't been to a Catholic funeral before and boy lots of stuff-not all only Catholic but I don't go for all the pomp and ceremony stuff. I mean-they really don't know why he died although he had advanced Alzheimers and was like 6'1 and 90+ lbs at the end but he still had to have an autopsy. So then after that they release the body, stuff it in clothes (after rigamorgis(sic) they have to cut them in two to fit on body) then put make up on and put him in open casket.

Sorry all seem yucky to me. Then all immediate family in one limo and us inlaws in second one and we go to funeral parlor-they all look at dead Da and say prayers over him, I stay in background. Then we get wisked around in front of house and pause-it's in front of round a bout so traffic backs up, we go to church and long processing files in, I feel like I'm on display, they do long service, some real touching stuff by relatives but lots of Catholic mumbo jumbo too, we go in limo, we sort of all joke in ours, go to grave yard more speech, then go to reception, talk then PARTY!!! I remember weaving my way back to Ma's place.

Wasn't as drunk as Irish wedding and clothes weren't as easy to dance in...and Damn band at hotel we ended up at was Tin Lizzy....not really my cup of tea.

Rest of visit was nice....went all over Ireland visiting with Bros and Sis' and stopping off between times with Joe's Ma....he's her favorite...she was much better as we left. Sooo glad we went....sooo glad we are back!!!

Good to see you enjoyed it mostly despite the unfortunate circumstances. Only ever been to an Irish funeral once (well it wasn't really, it was just my grandfather who was Irish), I wasn't old enough to drink at the time but I still had a Guinness to a 14 year old that was heavy stuff.

I noticed you were missing...sorry it was for THAT reason, though. :( For future reference, most airlines DO offer bereavement rates if you're flying out for a funeral. I don't know how much of a discount it is, but any little bit helps.

Welcome back.

We checked out the bereavement rates....they are a JOKE! How they do it is start with a first class ticket and take 50% off of it. We even tried going thru a travel agent, who was very patient and helpful even knowing she wasn't going to get a lot of comission on this whirlwind trip, but the prices she came up with were not much better than ours.

This was my forth trip to Ireland so it's not like we had to do any tourist stuff. At Joe's brother Eddies, he's the next oldest to Joe, they live on 2 acres, have a well and the house is beautiful-Ed built much of the inside stuff himself with wood that is a beautiful gold. The stairs themselves are awesome-he didn't use nails, wood pegs that go up a spiral, windows and glass everywhere, he is a tatoo artist and I do mean artist and his wife Fiona also paints and they are lovely, sort of hippy people, vegetarians now. The last time we were there they has a pig that lived in the house but he had passed. They had three huge dogs-very gentle but you had to walk with care. All his relatives are rather interesting and I love talking with them about a lot of different subjects and the girls and youngest brother have the best sense of humor, nots of slagging going on which fits my sense of humor to a T.

Also, Joe's ex was such a bitch....actually IS such a bitch that the family welcomed me from the first with such I think relief...LOL, that it's always been great to go visit them.
