Downloading music now seems to be what most people do, and chances of being caught are extremely slim, so the trend continues. Knowing that it only cost less than half of what we pay to make that album, I'm not willing to pay $25.00 (AUS) for 10 tracks at around 3 minutes each. So stores complain about lost profits when it comes to this.

I do feel for the artists in this case, but all the blame for illegal downloading should be put on record companies and music stores that put ridiculous prices on their product.

So what does everyone else think about this? Should it be considered acceptable to download music/movies for free? Should authorities try and put tougher measures in place?

Albums sell for $5-15 where I live. I don't approve of illegally downloading music, although I do it every now and then, I pay for Limewire, so it's not illegal.

And everybody here knows that I am 100% against illegal movie downloads. I've even been reporting sites left and right to the MPAA for illegal downloads.

Well... if you think about it, the RIAA makes the profit on the albums. It costs 2-4 bucks to make and they sell it for 15-17 bucks.

The artist gets a SMALL part of this income, I think Destiny's Child broke it down so that each of them got like 4 cents per album.

The artist could care less. There was a press conference where Lars from Metallica said he, nor the guys gave two shits (basically) if people downloaded their albums, the big push was from the RIAA.

Artists make their money from concerts, tshirts, memorabilia, etc etc.

I have like 3-4 songs from Limewire. I'm not going to go buy a Lynyrd Skynyrd album for Freebird.

Once one goes down, another pops up. There's just such a high demand now for downloading movies. I know since 'torrentspy' was asked to give IPs to the authorities, that they now can't let US people download from them. So for the people against illegal downloading, I guess that's a step in the right direction, even though they wouldn't give the IPs

Exactly. I do think the artists should be getting more from the sales of their albums...but with big record companies, that's not going to happen. They're being ripped as much as we are.

Yeah, that's the way I was thinking. Though it's gotten a little out of hand for me. My media library would offend a lot of illegal downloading protesters.

Just so long as when I'm a director, you don't steal my shit :)

Piracy is piracy is piracy and it's wrong. More may keep coming, but I'll just keep on reporting. :D

I think it's funny that the idea of this thread is to admit to illegal downloading, because it's just that, illegal :confused

Everyone knows downloading for free is illegal. So I'm not trying to defend that. What I wanted to know was whether you guys were against it or not. And pretty much just everyone's general view on the subject.

And I understand that completely.

We should all be thrown in jail and they should toss the key huh?

Actually, no. Just fined about $150,000, and up to 90 days in jail, I believe it is? :) Good music/movies or not, it's still ILLEGAL. The only legal music downloading is if you pay to download it. And the only LEGAL movie downloading sites are listed on the MPAA's site, Motion Picture Association of America

You may have to pay for this stuff, but what's easier, paying a cheap price to get music and movies, or the $150,000 charges in piracy, court fees, and getting ass-raped by a big black man?

I agree that it's illegal.
I sympathize with the rights of the artists.
But piracy is always going to be out there.
It's like trying to stop all the illegals that cross the border. You won't catch them all.

Noone really cared before when people used to record music from the radio using a cassette player or copying cassettes from a friend. Why? Because everyone knew that you did it, but there was no way to bust you. Now that it is easier to do it and easier to be busted at it everyone cares about it. Its always been done and it always will be done. If you dont like it, I say pay the $20.00 for the full cd...and like 2 songs off of it. :)
There has been a few bands that actually make CDs available for free to download on their websites. I believe one of them was Offspring.

Haha! I couldn't have said it better :D I wish I could rep you again! I've already posted the decent bit of a dent that illegally downloading movies puts in a film maker's profits, so I won't do it again. But believe me when I say that illegally downloading even one movie from Youtube can take away almost 30-40% of a film maker's profits.

Actually artists hardly even lose money over "illegal" downloading. They get most of their money from sponsors, show appearances, tours and merchandises. Actual albums sales are rather low on the list for their income.

If anything, kids downloading music in a easy fashion will make artists money, since their music can be listened to easier and hook potential future listeners.

Widespread access to different music = more people getting interested in the music = more interested listeners willing to buy their albums, merchandise and go to their shows.

WRONG!! it is illegal cause limewire was busted by the RIAA. You pay Limewire for "faster" Downloads and some other BS to use the service. that goes in their pocket. i cant find anywhere where the RIAA says Limewire is a LEGAL Site to get Download Music.

RIAA

heres a little info for you.

WikiAnswers - Is downloading songs from Limewire illegal or legal

So how does it feel to know you download Music ILLEGALLY :clap
