"wow"
(by me)
I want to say “wow”
When I think of our world
Our mansions and hummers
Our games and our jobs
We think of ourselves
Not usually of others
We care for our clothes,
Our stomachs and riches
But rarely do we
Try to stop and think
Of the impact we have
In the place that we live
When you drank coffee
From a Styrofoam cup
Did you ever realize
That it would still be here after your death
That cup joins
Billions of others
Filling up landfills
And oceans, forests, and fields
It stays here far longer
Then you ever would
Or your children's children's children's
Childhood.
It adds up with others
Filling up seas
Killing animals
That we'll now never see
It fills up the air
With brand new pollutes
As we make more and more
To meet the demand
Of offices and homes
That wish not to clean
Their cups and dishes
So now they simply throw it away
So then it enters the gathering display
Of what we allow
To sit on this earth
Then all I can do is frown and say “wow”
We make up excuses
That we can't possibly hurt
As much as volcano's and animals
And other things I've heard
We say it's a cycle
That the earth naturally goes
We say it's no problem
Soon it will slow
We say it's nothing
To worry about
Just go on living
Follow the route
That something unknown
Must of given us
Why should we worry
Or even fuss
To tell you the truth
I really don't care
Of the excuse after excuse
We all seem to find
Why does it matter
If it's our fault or not?
Why can't we just
Work a little bit?
To keep the earth safe
Happy and healthy
To keep the sky cleaner
The forests all hardy
Recycle your bottle
Reuse your shopping bags
Start walking and biking
Instead of driving your cars
It's less expensive then being harmful
Not just for our pockets and checkbooks
But for the lungs of our body
Our children and earth
I want to say “wow”
Because some say it's impossible
To reverse the damage
Of what has been done
But my question to you
Is three simple words:
Why not try?
