Now in Turtles incident, what concerns me there, is the dog lacked obedience in 'coming' to its owner when called, however the prior defensiveness and anxiety felt and shown by turtles party only escalated and made the situation worse, when in all likely hood the puppy that approached them was only greeting them and their dog.

I find people are VERY ignorant towards larger breed dogs and puppies when in fact it is the smaller breeds one must be more cautious with.

I totally understand what you're saying. However, we've had plenty of larger dogs approach the puppy both on and off the leash and have never felt threatened or concerned for the puppy like we did that time. With other dogs we've been able to read the body language and all they are interested in is just having a look and a sniff at the puppy and that's not a problem. But this dogs body language was just different, we felt he came at us agressively and when a dog has bolted across the road at you in that manner, you're not going to really wait and find out what he's going to do to the pup.
