The auroras (northern lights) this evening were absolutely phenomenal! :willy_nilly: They were mostly their usual green but at one point there was this intense red across the eastern sky too. I've seen some faint orange before but never this much red. It was just amazing and I wish I'd had my camera with me. I consider light shows like this one compensation for the brutal winters I have to put up with. :D

I've swam with dolphins
I've climbed Sydney Harbour bridge

Two things very high up on the usual bucket lists but seeing the northern lights HAS to be my personal top one to do (which I haven't yet), preferably in the middle of a couple of weeks in Iceland.

We occasionally get them in the UK but only in Shetland or Northern Scotland if we're lucky. Last year I think there was a possibility of them getting down our way but it only went as far as Southern Scotland.:( Anyway, still think Iceland or Canada would be the best place to see them, would spoil the mood having a couple of piss head Scots waving tins of Tennants Super around while I was trying to view them.

If you ever get the chance, go to Churchill, Manitoba. Then you can see northern lights AND polar bears at the same time. :D:thumbup (I've never been but I'd like to someday.)

I live in Calgary hun.. you couldn't be more right...

The last time I did see then was one night Jim was working the late shift and I was going to the car that the whole northern sky was green... I haven't seen them since that was about 5 years ago.

Anyone in Churchill who is out after dark looking up at the sky and not paying attention deserves to be eaten by polar bears

Apparently they were visible as far south as Omaha, Nebraska. I made sure I brought my camera and tripod to work today so there probably won't be any tonight. :p

Zirc, I found this pic on Reed Timmer's (StormChasers) facebook post. I looked in the comments and he says it was taken somewhere in Nebraska by fellow storm chaser Mike Hollingshead.

Here's Reed's Page:

There's a really bad, blurry photo of the red auroras in his Wall photos there. There's one lady who commented: "Wow...wish I'd been checking my FB four hours ago so I could've seen this." I'm thinking it would have worked better if she'd been outside four hours ago and seen it. :p Yes, I know what she meant but it cracked me up. I didn't need a facebook heads up to see it. :p

I still can't believe I didn't get pictures. :( Who knows if I'll ever see something like that again. :(
