Also 99% of the time that pharse is used it's not because someone is having serious problems in their life... it's "FML I over slept", "FML I'm so tired", "FML I got a bad grade on an exam", etc.

People need to get over their own selfish self-pity.

I think its used as an expression of negativity but everyone is entitled to self pity. We all have bad days.
