DESERT HOT SPRINGS — A Marine was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries from a car-to-car shooting early Thursday morning.
The victim was only described as in his early 20's, assigned to a unit of the 1st Marine Division and stationed at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center, Twentynine Palms.
The Marine had a single gunshot wound to his upper body, said Desert Hot Springs police Sgt. Brian Link. Officers found him about 2:15 a.m. near a convenience store. The shooting was near Indian Canyon Road and 20th Avenue.
Capt. Lisa Lawrence-Arocho, a spokeswoman for the 1st Marine Division, said she could not release further information until 24 hours after the family had been notified.
It's the second Marine based at Twentynine Palms who has been shot in the Coachella Valley in the last month.
Cpl. Allan DeVillena, 22, was shot and killed about 2 a.m. Nov. 10 after Palm Springs police say he hit one officer with his car while a second officer hung out of the passenger-side window trying to stop him.
The two officers who fired their guns remain on paid administrative leave as the Marine Corps, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office and Palm Springs police continue their investigations.
Desert Hot Springs police ask anyone with information about Thursday's shooting to call Detective Raul Sandoval at (760) 329-6411 Ext. 330 or Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-STOP.
This MARINE was actually shot in the head! His mom is a good friend of mine. I am asking for prayers for the family as Vandi and John deal with this.
