I'm sure I've had something made in peanut oil at some point, but I've never used it. Does it actually taste like peanuts?

Been a while now since I used it.. Honestly I don't remember if it left a taste in the food but it is much lighter..

As far as I remember it has a slight taste but it's not like I would drink it.. lol :p

Nope. We have a living starter at our restaurant that is about 7 years old.

Yeast is alive, and it's what makes bread work. All you do with a starter (also called a Mother) is use half of it every day, then feed the rest a new dose of flour and water - the two things it needs to survive and replicate.

And yes, they can smell pretty yuck.

So..how long can you leave it without using it? If your NOT using it...would you just keep feeding it to keep it alive? He didnt tell us the answers to these questions

I found this episode last night VERY interesting....he's my favourite "celebrity" chef.

You do have to feed them every day to keep them alive. Even on like Christmas Day when the restaurant is closed, the bread baker has to come in for a few minutes and "feed the bitch."

They can live indefinitely if properly cared for. Yeast only live a short time - and essentially what you are doing is providing enough food for them to replicate before they die - so there are new yeast cells created every day. You would have to use or discard some of it every day, too, otherwise it would just keep increasing in volume and you'd literally be up to your ass in "Mother"
