I've only been twice, and loved it both times. Not nearly as crowded as Sydney, and the shopkeepers were all lovely and friendly. Southbank? is nice too

You should restring it yourself. It is easy. And I would suggest you buy some light strings. They are supposed to be easier use for beginners.

One thing not mentioned as I recall is having sore fingers. It took me about a month before I had enough callous on my fingers. You need to practice about 15 minutes a day and try to do that every day. I you only practice once a week you will be wasting your time as the muscle memory will not be there

This is a pretty good video on stringing.

I'm learning it too its hard on my fingers
ive got wimpy computer guy finger skin
my fingers are strong but my skin hates me
I wanted to just tape my fingers but I was told that it would keep me from getting caluses to protect my skin

If you go with light strings it may help with the finger pain.

Also nylon strings are easier on the finger. And if you play an electric instead of an acoustic it is a bit easier on the fingers.

They still will be sore for a while though. Don't give up as they will get better

If you're restringing an acoustic from nylon to steel you have to watch the neck bow. Often you can get a lot of bow and will have to do a truss rod adjustment; otherwise it can effect your intonation (the audial symmetry between each 12 fret groupings). Might be worth just this once letting someone more experienced handle it. One of my guitars neck warped just from a faulty tuning peg that put undue tension on one string, they're finely balanced set ups.

I never said I could play :p

I just am good at collecting information :D

Good luck

And as Zorak mentioned check into what the guitar is meant to be stringed with. I might be wrong but I believe some guitars are meant to be played with nylon. Where some it does not matter.

Just remember to play lightly and "stay thirsty my friend" :D
