Well, most of the stuff on the radio, at least 80%, I deeply abhor. Rap and all that crap aside, Rock still isn't nearly as good as it could be. Most of the stuff I've attempted to tolerate when listening seems to be all the same. You get some sort of bass line, a crazy drum part, a nice easy guitar chord progression, and in the middle some hack guitar solo that sounds really impressive, but has no musical insight behind it. And above all that, we get to enjoy wonderful poetic lyrics that some well-paid automaton scratched onto paper. They treat music as a machine. As much as they pretend, its no longer about conveying emotions or art, its a well-perpetuated get rich quick scheme.

Look at the facts. 250 years ago, Beethoven was getting paid as much as that poor sucker at the DMV who takes your picture for your driver's license. Beethoven happened to write possibly the greatest artistic achievement of mankind. A couple centuries later, dozens of the top jazz musicians, the greatest abstract aural artists of the day, struggle to pay the rent, as music still doesn't pay too well. In return, they create a perfectly artistic counterpart to the visual art abstract movement. Up until this point, recordings have been available, but not very profitable. It was up to performances in clubs and small theaters to make a living. However, now, with compact discs, the massive radio chains, the huge stadiums, and a vast supporting market of consumers, music has turned away from art, and made into a huge industry consumed by money and greed.
I mean, Beethoven got paid crap and made masterpieces, many modern self-proclaimed "musicians" make crap and get paid millions. Why spend time, work hard, and make art, when you can make crap and get the same paycheck?

Thanks if you actually read this. I just had to fume :D
Bottom line: support real music :)

Huey Lewis and the News:

WTF are they doing playing it on Classic Rock stations?! When is Huey Lewis rock, albeit Classic Rock? Am I missing something? They'll play Skynyrd, then Zeppelin, then frickin' Huey Lewis? HUH?!

I'd rather hear Bob Marley than Huey Lewis!!

I've never really been a fan of Bob Marley .. I don't like soft tempo/beat music. Just never appealed to me. I think people like him because he is an icon, not because they actually like his music.

I know tons of people who have his cd's proudly displayed on their cd racks .. yet in 30 years I have never seen/heard one of them take any of those cd's out and actually listen to one of them. And that includes all my pot head friends.

Might I suggest to you my friend of the radio station challenged variety .. to burn some CD's lol (or have someone send you some) or get an iPod. The radio sucks, period. If it isn't playing complete BS it's playing the same songs every 20 min on the repeat cycle.

I love Bob Marley! In fact, I was smoking a big fattie at his house last week! NO LIE!!! I have the pics to prove it! I also went to his shrine where he is embalmed, and learned a lot about why he was so revered by his fellow Jamaicans. His music was good, but behind the music are the lyrics, and behind the lyrics was a cry out against the oppression caused by the social and political upheaval in Jamaica. He was an activist and someone who was actually willing to bring the people together, and he used his music as his medium. That is why he is such a big deal to some people...I can personally confirm that Jamaica is very much a third world country, and the people there lack leadership and lawfullness. To them Bob was the answer, he was the one who with the vision of bringing everyone together, spoken through his music.

Coldplay. Sorry. They're just soft and wimpy

Yep! Totally agree.

And speaking of Coldplay, Chris Martin's wife, Gwenyth Paltrow does that duet with, (also speaking of), Huey Lewis, "Cruising." Yeah, Smokey Robinson's making money, but gag me with a spoon, that remake makes me retch!! Smokey FTW!
