Well, most of the stuff on the radio, at least 80%, I deeply abhor. Rap and all that crap aside, Rock still isn't nearly as good as it could be. Most of the stuff I've attempted to tolerate when listening seems to be all the same. You get some sort of bass line, a crazy drum part, a nice easy guitar chord progression, and in the middle some hack guitar solo that sounds really impressive, but has no musical insight behind it. And above all that, we get to enjoy wonderful poetic lyrics that some well-paid automaton scratched onto paper. They treat music as a machine. As much as they pretend, its no longer about conveying emotions or art, its a well-perpetuated get rich quick scheme.
Look at the facts. 250 years ago, Beethoven was getting paid as much as that poor sucker at the DMV who takes your picture for your driver's license. Beethoven happened to write possibly the greatest artistic achievement of mankind. A couple centuries later, dozens of the top jazz musicians, the greatest abstract aural artists of the day, struggle to pay the rent, as music still doesn't pay too well. In return, they create a perfectly artistic counterpart to the visual art abstract movement. Up until this point, recordings have been available, but not very profitable. It was up to performances in clubs and small theaters to make a living. However, now, with compact discs, the massive radio chains, the huge stadiums, and a vast supporting market of consumers, music has turned away from art, and made into a huge industry consumed by money and greed.
I mean, Beethoven got paid crap and made masterpieces, many modern self-proclaimed "musicians" make crap and get paid millions. Why spend time, work hard, and make art, when you can make crap and get the same paycheck?
Thanks if you actually read this. I just had to fume
Bottom line: support real music
