I dont think I could do the job of being a DHS worker, having to go into peoples homes and take their kids away because of certain circumstances.
One of the case workers I work with was telling me some stories last night of when he use to be a DHS worker. I was in awe and some of the stories.
He told me about this one mom, she has 9 kids. He had gotten a call about how DHS needed to check up on them. So Tom had gone to their apartment. One of the kids answered the door and told him that their mom was out getting her hair done. He asked if he could come in and the kids let him in. He said they lived in this tiny apartment, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with 9 kids. The bedroom had a mattress, that he said smelled like urine, that layed on the floor. He asked who slept there and the 16 year old told him "whoever gets their first at night". Tom said that the refirgerator was NASTY, probably hadnt been cleaned ever, didnt have any food in it. He said there was a family size package of hamburger meat on the table that was thawing out, the plastic that covers the hamburger meat had been ripped open. He said he noticed that he had seen a brown ring around the edges of the hamburger meat and he got to wondering what it could be, so he stepped closer and noticed that the brown ring around the edges of the meat, was roaches nibbling on the meat, and this was what these kids were having for dinner that night.
He said that the toilet in the place did not work, that it was piled pretty high with poop and that the kids were now using the bathtub to go to the bathroom in.
It just disturbs me, breaks my heart.
He told more stories of kids being locked in cars, kids being beat, etc. But this one story that I just told you guys keeps running thru my head. I guess cause its so hard to fathom someone living in an enviroment like that plus having your kids live in that crap.
