.. So here Is the Story.. And I only know it Because this Is my Nephew.. although I havent seen him for many years.. bad news is always sad to hear

My Nephews house caught Fire, the cause they believe was a space heater in the babys room. the baby I8 months old died. The part that pisses me off.. The mother was sleeping in the same room as the baby.. she woke to the smell of smoke.. And ran Out of the room to warn others.. AND THEN decided to return to get the baby.. at which point the fire in the room was to aggressive and she was unable to do so..

I am having a hard time understanding.. Any Mother I know.. instinct sais you would have checked and grabbed the baby BEFORE you ran out of the room.

What mother would leave the room without the baby then come back for the baby aftor shes knows the house is on fire and knows the room probadly is on fire also thats sad
 
My first instict would be to grab the baby... but.... I'm not sure what I would do if I woke up from a dead sleep to a room full of smoke that I most likely was breathing in for a while.... so between a abrupt awaking and lungs full of smoke... maybe she wasn't even close to thinking straight... Just a differing POV... hell, I don't know

I'm a bit torn on this, but I'm thinking about the same as Tim. Im sure this lady feels a ton of remorse and guilt for not grabing the baby first. But in the same token, she also was a hero and warned others.
 
I only posted what I did, because I don't have any idea what it would be like to wake up to a room full of smoke. My brother is a full time fireman, and from what he has said in the past, when they go into burning homes and wake people up, they act like they are drunk, very disoriented. This is one reason people run back into burning homes.
 
It's not fair to judge a person on how they handle emergencies they were not trianed to handle.

It's easy to talk, but I can tell you from long experience watching people in stressful situations, that you never know who's going to stay cool, and who's going to lose it.

Whoever up there noted that she kept enough wits about her to warn others has a strong grasp on this thing though.

Very sad. She'll be haunted forever, and an innocent was lost. Sorry to hear about your families tragedy Silent. :(
 
A lot of things in modern houses give off very toxic gases when they burn, she probably was no where near thinking straight when she woke up, in fact it was amazing that she did as most of these toxins poison you in your sleep, it may well have been that the smoke killed the baby before the fire.

I feel very sorry for this woman, I cannot even imagine the pain she must be feeling.

Sorry to hear about that. I think she should have grabbed the baby. I've heard about mothers that got in car accidents. They panicked when they found out their child was trapped inside and lifted the damn car to get the child out. So...I find it hard to believe that baby wasn't the first thing on her mind when she came to.

Then again, I've never been in the situation either. I inhale alot of smoke everyday, but...who knows...

Ah, this brought tears to my eyes.

I suppose until an inquest happens, no-one will be sure.

I'd like to think that if it were my son, I would have grabbed him first.

On the other hand, it could be that the smoke inhalation and being disorientated that way, maybe did cause the mother the inability to think straight, as soon as she got out of bed.

I hope it was the case at least, that she wasn't fully aware until she had left the room, exactly what was what and had not left the baby knowing what was what - that would be one of the most chilling things I would have heard otherwise.

I am so sad to hear this Silent, it must be so awful for you, despite you not having seen your relative for years.
