Here's a small bit:

BUDAPEST (JTA) -- Hungary’s lawmakers rejected constitutional amendments to make Holocaust denial a punishable offense.

Some local Jewish community leaders believe that Monday's vote secured the first parliamentary victory for Jobbik, a rapidly rising local neo-Nazi movement widely predicted to win several seats in the national elections due within a year.

Can someone tell me why they would try to put someone who denies the Holocaust in jail? Do we put Elvis-seers in jail? Bigfoot? MoonLandingDeniers? Heck, we had a President who swore God spoke to him personally telling him to bring Democracy to the ME. He's running around free too.

Truth needs no law to support it. Or so I thought? I would think the 'history' of the Holocaust, if all true, could stand up all by itself? By trying to quelch questions and put deniers in jail makes me wonder what is trying to be hidden? Good on Hungary for voting it down.

Problems cannot be solved by the same level of thinking that created them. ~ Albert Einstein

they are still trying to think about how to erase the past...

The truth is what society makes it to be. If I decided to call the apparent refraction of the sun's energetic output through our atmosphere 'green' then of course, you would be skeptical of that, but only because you were brought up believing that the current slice of the EM spectrum is coined 'blue'.

The point is, truth is not reality, but an accepted normality.

I'm glad they rejected a law that punishes you for either believing or not believing something. I'm not saying that the people who don't believe it are smart, whatever their agenda, if you believe in the principle of free speech, without doing any research on it, my impression is this kind of a law is bad.

So what are you saying?

That the Holocaust happening is more pluasible than sighting Elvis decades after his death? Especially with so many imitators... :ninja
Honestly, I can't see how anyone can deny the Holocaust....

Ok, but the issue (I think) is, should laws be passed that try to enforce what you say or think- what is your position? :)

there should be laws to severely inhibit the role one plays in society when it comes to things like that.

I am sure you know how to use a search engine.:cool

I may not agree with what someone says or believes but the essence of freedom of speech has to allow for the nut jobs too or our illusion of freedom becomes fainter still.

Hmm, who decides? How about when a group of conservatives are in power and they think the liberals' plan is tantamount to disaster and all of their conservative precious "values" might be flushed? Do they decide? Or vice a versa? You statement is fine as long as everyone thinks alike, which they don't.

You may be speaking in principles, but the devil is in the realities. If you believe in free speech and elections, someone like David Duke (I know who he is ;)) might get elected.

Honestly, much as it sickens me that people can still deny the Holocaust, it would sicken me more to censor someone else's free speech. I may not like what you have to say, but I will defend with my dying breath your right to say it.

Even if you're saying someone as utterly preposterous as denying the Holocaust.
