While not really new news ..its does show the life that a woman has to often live due to location

that is governed by religion..this is common

How wrong is it?
I give it a 10 on the wrong scale.
Some will give it a 0 as they see nothing wrong with it as it "the way it is" in these cultures

and they may be living in one of these cultures themselves.

There are serious cultural differences here that need to be considered. Just because some things that in our culture are unacceptable doesn't mean that's the way it is everywhere. We don't have any right to judge a country or culture because it is different than ours. I'm sure there are many cultural differences all over the world that may disgust and anger you, but we can't expect to impose our views on the world. It just doesn't work that way.

Hell even in our culture in the US women are still fighting to be considered equal and still make considerably less money than men do. We've been fighting that battle for 100 years and we still have a ways to go.

And I think this thread was mainly started to break the new rule set by V on this forum about racism/hate/etc and it's certainly not a good idea to do so.

im only judging because i know how my friend in SA is treated and how shitty she feels about it. its mind blowing what they do there and she cant do even the simplest things for fear of DEATH.
im not judging them because they are different im judging them because my friend is being abused and treated like an animal or slave and while the culture dictates that how it is she doesnt like it one bit and for that i hate SA

I knew a defender would come along.
Its wrong..just because a culture allows it doesnt make it right...and those that approve can say the same.
But on what basis can the treatment of woman as such be defended.

Obviously in the right direction

Easy girl
Who has been insulted?
I stick up for women with a thread and you try to twist it into "an intentional breaking of the rules"
I thought staff had advised you to avoid me.
Why are you trolling me?

I'm sure people of the untouchable caste in India fare no better and rail against their fate just the same (over 160 million people who aren't even considered HUMAN), and yet it is simply their belief and culture.

"India's Untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten, and raped with impunity by upper-caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place"

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2003/06/0602_030602_untouchables.html

As much as we in the US would like to claim the moral highground in culture we still have no right to tell another country/culture how to behave or live. It is not our right and we are NOT the world police. It is simply their belief system and culture. I'm sure that many of our customs would be offensive and considered abuse to many other cultures.

That is definitely true ... culture shock.

... but we can't expect to impose our views on the world. It just doesn't work that way.
Agreed.

Crazy! I bet she has a lot of information that would be fascinating to hear about ... and pretty sad and horrifying.

I thought I had heard about "Women's Rights" starting to grow around the Middle East ... has she mentioned anything about that? .... I would imagine that topic is something that is kept pretty underground for fear of punishment.

I can't believe that anybody thinks its okay to abuse and control women within inches of their life, simply because "it's their belief and culture".

It's absolutely disgusting and wrong. Nobody should be treated like that, no matter what "culture" dictates.

Makes it strike home a little when you know someone suffering from it

I am an equal rights guy all the way around...goes with voting...pay etc.

This case goes even beyond that...her nephew bringing her bread a major crime...its not even a rights issue..I cant think of the word for it.

well being that shes not here to say herself i dont feel free to divulge much about her specifically but i know they do public stoning and deaths for things that we would deem hugely ridiculous

it is just like that video. its grotesque IMO.. to make someone starve to death because they have no family and because they cant go to the store by themselves because they have a vagina. FFS

And yet our own history is full of very serious wrongs. We completely obliterated a people because we wanted their land. We enslaved over FOUR MILLION people. I'm sure there are many other cultures that thought we were in the wrong, and yet how would we have reacted to another country taking over and imposing what they thought was right on us? Notsomuch.

While we find it abhorrent, I'm sure in turn other countries/cultures find MANY things abhorrent about our us.

True. Hopefully, human rights will continue to grow in that region.
