If I were to try to describe colors to a blind person, I'd probably do it with music - play something fast paced for red, something soothing for light blue, etc. Just an idea anyway.

i'm not much of an artist...a poet or even a creative thinker...so coming up with descriptions for them would be difficult for me..

explain the sound of a train whistle to a deaf person... if they can read... write it down ( drawings of sound waves, the doppler effect, etc )

explain the color of blood to a blind person... if they can hear... talk about it.. ( the color spectrum and all, and the different colors of blood ( when exposed to oxygen, then blood turns red ) )

Blood to blind: Let them feel some warm soft velvet.

Whistle to deaf: Stand them right in front of it so they can feel it!

i like your thinking on this...

well, except for the stand infront of a train thing. lol but letting them feel the sound waves. thats good. :)

Along the same lines of thinking....

How do you know that when I see red, I am seeing the same color as you when you see red?

If since birth I saw green and told it was red, whenever I saw green, I would label it as red. But if since birth you really saw red, we would be seeing two completely differant colors and never know it. How can we be sure that we are seeing exactly the same color????

To further complicate this; when you see a color, you're actually seeing every color except the one you see.

To explain: When you see a blue shirt, you're seeing a shirt that is EVERY OTHER COLOR (red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, violet). This is because those colors are absorbed where as the blue is reflected back, which is actually why you see the shirt as blue.

Make sense?

You don't see the colors that are absorbed. You only see the colors that are reflected back to you.

I'm not sure I really agree there... that is a great way to do it, but then they'll then start to associate everything soft and warm with red... but won't actually know what RED itself is.

But it seems thats the best way to do it.
