Re: How to legalize Marajuana

The impact of legalising mary jane on society is minimal. Legalising the harder drugs with have the bigger, more profound effect of cutting crime. Legalising only mary jane would be a waste of time.

Well...forgetting everyone else...I'd be happier if they just legalized MJ.
Course that's me being a selfish bastard.
I don't know how to go about the other drugs.

Legalising other drugs could be done in a number of ways.

A report written by a couple of prominent UK drug scientists came up with 7 solutions. They've written a book, which I'll get around to buying at some point.

One of their suggestions was that there could be premises specifically licensed for certain drugs: like an LSD & Mushroom Lounge, Cocaine Bar, Morphine Café, an Ecstasy & Amphetamine night Club etc. The drugs would only be on sale in these particular places and the places could be geared to them.

The very hardest drugs, like Heroin, and crack, could only be available by prescription from a doctor.

Mary Jane could be available from the same places you'd buy tobacco and alcohol.

At the same time I would increase the penalties for the unlicensed supply of the drugs, and entrance to drug's premises would require ID (18 and over only). Every premises could provide full information about the drugs, their effects, side effects etc.

Just one possible way...

Re: How to legalize Marajuana

Why would a doctor prescribe heroin and crack? Surely that would go against their ethic?

for those who have an addiction I would think. Cheapest solution with the least impact on society.

Oh, by the way, doctors prescribe heroin all the time, until very recently, it was the painkiller of choice for the NHS. (Diamorphine)

Wouldn't it be better for them and the addict to just carry on prescribing methadone?

methadone has a lot more side effects than heroin. Heroin is thought to be cheaper too, though I have no data to back that up.

Perhaps the patient should have the choice?

Also, a casual user, who might want a hit, wouldn't want methadone - it doesn't give the entirely same experience.

I still think the whole thing goes against the doctors ethic. You go to a doctor because you want to be cured, not because he's the only source of recreational drugs which are bad for you. If someone was seriously obese, I wouldn't expect the doctor to give them cheeseburgers.
The waiting in doctors is bad enough as it is, I'm be pissed off if it got even longer because doctors were distracted with the supply of drugs which are bad for you to people who dont want to be cured.

well that's certainly one way to look at it.

the other way is that if the doctor won't supply heroin, the user will head out onto the street and buy some that's contaminated and of poor quality, which is much worse for his health. You have to remember that if you're taking pure heroin, and with clean and sterile needles or better yet just smoking it, the worst that can happen to you is constipation. The stuff on the street can kill.

Well having doctors supply it isn't going to help the problem. For starters, the'd have to buy crap stuff on the streets in the first place so nasty, illegal drug dealers would still be around and then what would be the point of doctors dishing it out because it's going to people who want to take it. It may as well just be sold in the shops because the only difference would be that it would illiminate illegal drug dealers and stop wasting doctors time on people who dont want to be cured.

Doctors get it pure, the NHS doesn't need dealers, there is a diamorphine manufacturer in the UK who can make pure stuff in large quantities.

So you're saying, someone who has never had crack or heroin or isn't an addict could just roll up to the doctors and ask for some?
So what is the point of wasting doctors time and expecting them to break their ethic when you may as well just sell it in a shop if just anyone could buy it?

I think having to actually go to a doctor would dissuade a lot of people from wanting to try it. The doctor also has a great position to explain exactly what they're getting themselves into.

It's just one suggestion of course. Personally, I'd like to be able to buy it at the chemist.

Re: How to legalize Marajuana

So do you value peoples right to do drugs over peoples right to be cured of illnesses? Because that's exactly what your proposal does.Or are you just going to spend an absolute fortune on shipping over more doctors from abroad and paying them so this dosen't affect people who are ill in any way? Of course if you did that, you'd still have people up in arms because sick people would be pissed off that you wouldn't spend any more money on helping them but you're prepared to spend it on supplying people with harmful drugs.
Also, I'm interested to how you would persuade doctors to change their ethic so they would do this? Doctors are very strong and not easily dissuaded on matters of this. The USA has a bugger of a problem with executions by lethal injections because doctors refuse to do it because it goes against the doctors ethic.

I don't think this would require a choice between helping people or not.

And it's not an alien concept, heroin is currently prescribed, though quite rarely, and has been done more so in the past. Until the war on drugs, doctors prescribed pure heroin for free to addicts - it drastically lessens their impact on society and is far safer than leaving them at the fate of the dealers. Back then the UK's heroin policy was the envy of the world.

There's no reason why we can't do that again.

So how do you think a doctor who has been through years of hard work at university to get a respectable job is going to react when told he has to double up as a drug dealer?

That's what they already do Peter. They prescribe drugs.

Re: How to legalize Marajuana

They prescribe drugs to make people better, not so they can get off their tits. Huge difference!
to best of my knowledge in Canada marijuana is prescribed to patients with things like MS, there needs to be a good reason to get it
