I was scammed on my very first freelance job. I delivered the work, and the client vanished, no payment, no explanation. These days I use different tactics to protect myself. Here’s how you can protect yourself:

  • Avoid random deals on social media or unknown freelance sites.
  • Use Escrow for big projects or new clients. It secures the payment as client cannot easily back out.
  • Stick with trusted platforms like Upwork or Fiverr, they offer some protection from shady clients.
Have you ever been scammed as a freelancer?

start by researching any client who contacts you. Look for online reviews, a company website, or a LinkedIn profile to verify legitimacy. Scammers often have no digital presence or use fake names.

Stick to reputable platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, or Fiverr. These offer dispute resolution and secure payment systems. Avoid deals made solely over email or social media without a traceable record.

Never accept unpaid test tasks. Scammers use this tactic to get free work. If a test is necessary, it should be paid or minimal.

Always request a simple contract or at least a written agreement outlining payment, scope, and deadlines. Clear terms protect you if the client becomes unresponsive or tries to change the deal.

Watch for red flags, clients who avoid video calls, pressure you to start immediately, or are vague about the job. These behaviors often signal something’s wrong.

Finally, ask for an upfront deposit, especially from new clients or for large projects. It shows commitment and weeds out those who aren’t serious.

it is to be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true, avoid communicating off-platform, and protect your personal information.

I will never hire a freelancer who has low or no qualifications. I always look for someone who has many qualifications and has proof that they really do their job well and can be trusted. I think this is a vital tip to avoid scam freelancers.

it would be great to demands for upfront payments. Then look out for unclear or changing scope even those with Payment issues
