How old is the Earth?

Recently modern geologists have determined that the Earth is about 4.5 Billion years old. Creationists tell me that the earth is clearly only 5 thousand years old, and dinosaurs and man lived together, and the earth was covered in a ice shield and people lived to be thousands of years old.

What do you believe?

I'd go with the geologists in saying it's around 4.5 billion years old. But I still believe that man, and dinosaur lived together at some point in time, and many other periodic times before and after. Definitely older than a mere 5 thousand years old though, positive of that..

Ah, dont worry, I grew up with these nutters. God was perfect when he killed people in a worldwide genocide by flooding the earth too and Lots daughters were right to get their father drunk and rape him as well but hey, what do I know about a book I've read cover to cover? :D;)

Exactly, and it boggles the mind that some parts are meant to be taken literal, some parts are to be taken figuratively, but all of it is 'true'.
For the record, the great flood did not make the grand canyon, just thought I'd get that off my chest too. It's not physically possible.

The age of earth is determined by very careful geological examination, of course it's impossible to say exactly how old it is, but my bet is with with the real scientists. The creationists just say 'because the bible says so' and thats just plain stupidity.

Most creatures we today call dinosaurs went extinct 65 million years ago, earliest evidence of modern humans are from about 10,000 BC I think.

Scientists dedicate their lives to researching things such as this, so when they come up with an approximate time the earth was born I believe them. Who am I do to say they don't really know what they're doing?

I'd definately say it was in the billions but I haven't really looked into it.

You know there are scientists that believe in creation. There is a movie about it from Ben Stein called Expelled. The main problem with science is there is much of it that is not exact. One minute you can't eat eggs, the next you should eat eggs. One second you can't have salt, then you should have salt. One minute the earth is 3 billion years old, then its 5. There are no black holes, there are black holes, you can't travel faster than light, well maybe you can. It's this theory business that gives science its bad name in terms of credibility. While for creationists its the over-the-top, our-way-or-the-highway religious fanatics that make people doubt. Either way, its a personal choice because it comes down to who you believe.

For me I go with creation and 6,000 years. Too many weird things poke holes in the whole carbon dating and layered geology stuff.
