I've drank lots of wine over the years - admittedly for the alcohol buzz it produces, like all alcohol drinks do. Some was better than others. I never understood the ultra "dry" wine connoisseurs. It always tasted bad to me, even after several glasses - now that's bad, lol. I liked semi-sweets that actually tasted good. At any rate, it's decomposed fruit - who would drink any of this stuff if it wasn't for the alcohol buzz it produces?

So brings the topic of the thread. How much would you pay for a bottle of wine? This stuff here sells for $185 AU or $200 US per bottle:

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/mo...-as-wine-tumbles/story-fn7x8me2-1226099418346

I reckon the winemakers were pretty sick over this accident.

But $185 per bottle? What percent of the average persons weekly pay is that? Could any wine be so good as to justify this price?

Any wine connoisseurs here that can speak to that?

I hate wine snobs. No wine is worth thousands of pounds for what it taste like. I find wine pretty easy. It's one of the few things that you can generally grade how good it is on the price but only up to a point. A £5-6 bottle (supermarket prices) is going to be ok. In restaurants, I always go for the house wine. It's generally one of the cheaper ones but you know it will be good. No restaurant will risk their reputation by serving crap as their house wine.

I rarely drink wine. In all my years of trying I have only found a couple of reds I could drink and then usually with a meal only. Whites or some rosas are ok but I am a low budget wine drinker. If the buzz is my goal I can buy enough whiskey to get there a lot of times for $185.

That makes a lot of sense.

LOL...I was reading the news article and couldn't help but think that you could tell the alcoholics working in the factory b/c they were on the floor trying to slurp up the spillage. No offense to any recovering alcoholics...you know as well as I do the lengths some will go for a drink. ;)

I am not a big wine drinker...hate most of the stuff. But the Moscato that they serve at Olive Garden is really nice. I pay $14.99 a bottle for it now and that's a frigging $3 increase in price since I started drinking it!!!

I haven't had a glass of wine in some time, but it's something I do enjoy. I only drink red.

I generally pay about £5-£8 for a bottle. I will go up to maybe £20 for a special occasion.

But I guess if you're a billionaire, what difference is it to you if you pay £20 for a bottle, or £2000?

I'm lucky to live above not only a wholesale beverage center, but also a wine and liquor store (let the jealousy begin hahaha) and one right across from where I live, and every so often I'll buy a variety of pinot grigio and chardonnay from California or champagne from NY..and I'll usually spend no more than $11-$15 bucks for a regular size bottle... wine is one of those things where you can find a hidden jem and not have to pay an arm and a leg for...tho I have had $5 bottles of pinot and chardonnay that have tasted absolutely atrocious hahaha...over the years I've accumulated several 15% off coupons after you buy a certain amount of bottles, so that knocks a little off the price as well

For certain vintages, I've spent upwards of $30-50 at times, but never any more than that. I'm something of a wine snob, but I've also had some $2-3 bottles that were decent enough. Generally I'll spend between $10-12 on a bottle.

My wine is 15 something, but I buy it on Wednesdays when it's 10% off, so 12 something :D Expensive in my world but I only buy a bottle once every few months.

I would probably go $40-$50 for a good wine, but that would most likely be for a gift to someone.

I don't see the big deal right now. I tried some Australian white wine...hated it. And I thought white wine was supposed to be the most delicious type of wine. Idk, maybe I'm just a pussy.

I've had a $150 wine out at dinner once, and glasses from some wines that were probably $200-$300. But I wasn't paying.

Most I've paid is maybe $30.

So how did the taste of the expensive wines compare to the $30 wine or to $5 wine?

I can't speak for HTC... but a lot of the price disparities have to do with the rarity of the specific vintage, as well as the quality and type of grapes. For me, I can tell the difference between a $10 bottle of '06 Napa Valley Cab and a $50 '07 from the same winery. The '07 bottles are more rare to find right now, and that's considered to have been the best Cab to come from Napa and Sonoma in a good 20 years. Hell, I can taste a difference between a '07 Cab from Napa or Sonoma and one from another area. I have a $50 bottle in my wine refrigerator right now that I'm planning on holding onto for a while. I also have some less expensive ones that will probably gain value as time goes on.

That all being said, I doubt I could tell a difference between a $150 bottle and a $200 bottle, but I can certainly tell the difference between a $10 bottle and a $50 or $100 bottle. It just depends on your tastes really. I've had really good $10 bottles before, and that's about the prince range I normally purchase from.

Of course I'm with you, you are the one who picks the wine, I just nod and drink it.

I do drink white wine and rosé with my friends though. Bit hit and miss. I buy the cheapest of the cheap and it'll either taste nice or taste minging. But I have no social life so it's not often I drink them :surrender

I can taste the difference between some $10 bottles and $200 bottles, but honestly, some of the expensive ones have been worse, IMO, than the cheaper ones. There's so much it depends on. But the one bottle I had out on a date night, I'll have to look up the brand, was the best wine I've ever had.

This was it: http://minerwines.com/index.html

I try to get mine when it goes on sale for $9. I won't spend $14 for it. Gnarly Head Cab. Not too bad. When I'm in the mood for wine. I too prefer booze.

I've never spent more than $15. for a bottle. Even when I was rolling in cash I could not bring myself to spend the $90 they wanted for Dom (just to try it and see what the fuss was about) But I'll spend the money for a bottle of Chivas or Myers;) Good thing they last for years around here.:ninja I just don't drink like I used to.
