I was really good at copying things that I saw, at least when they were other drawings/paintings. Then it got to a point where I wanted to go to art school, and I realized I wasn't "seeing" things that other artists saw and had to be taught to look in a different way. Art school helped me progress in the 2 years I was there, and I have my friends from there as Facebook friends, so that's exciting that we keep in touch.
If you want to learn to draw, then you need to learn how to see. You need to see how light affects things, how shadows affect things, perspective, shapes, etc... Training your hand is next, training it to draw what you're now seeing.
