They should start making you wear monitors to see how many alcoholic beverages you consume as well and not hire anyone who drinks more than 2 drinks in an evening. Also a calorie counter for how many calories you consume and if you consume over so many per day you can't be hired. Their slogan could be "Only perfect people need apply!"

It's funny, I like those ER shows, etc., I frequently watch them interview the docs who go outside talking about the patients, guess what they are doing, smoking cigarettes ;) But I guess those patients they save aren't complaining.

And I think it's f*cking ridiculous to berate an employee for smoking in her own damn car on hospital property! Give me a break!!!

I've never smoked. Don't like the smell and have asthma, but I don't equate smokers with lepers like so many do, in fact sometimes when some anti-smokers get on the rag about it I feel like lighting up just in protest......

My hospital offers patients, staff, as well as visitors the choice between the gum or the patch. If they ask for it. Free of charge while they are on the campus.

Sound's like a good move from an ethical standpoint... How are you going to go into a Health field and be addicted to a drug? Legal or not.

Many people in the medical profession are addicted to prescription drugs. Doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc. and I doubt the hospital in question isn't screening for those things. I would much rather have a smoker looking after me than a drug addict especially if he / she is about to cut me open or inject me with something.

if they are going to start policing one, then they better start looking at everything

That was my point. Unfortunately do-gooders like to pick and choose according to what's politically correct or as in this case incorrect.

I'm glad I don't smoke anymore. Fucking evil, evil people I tell ya.

Many doctors are not only smokers, but are overweight. Not too healthy.

So with that said, should hospitals stop hiring overweight medical staff? They're not a good example if they do too little to keep themselves healthy.
